Expert hairstylist shares tips on how to hide a bad haircut after American model Emily Ratajkowski went viral on social media for sharing an embarrassing hair fail
Model Emily Ratajkowski took to social media to reveal an unfortunate hair failure. On March 25th, Emily posted to her TikTok account, which boasts an impressive following of 2.7 million, to share the questionable new look.
In the video, Emily was first seen hiding her hair with her hand before moving it to uncover a very messy and choppy set of bangs that appear to start all the way from the back of her head. Many fans quickly rushed to the comments to show their support and offer advice on recovering from this hair tragedy.
Emily tries to find some humour in the situation. She tells the camera, “Is it giving member of The Dare or is it giving [singer] Karen O? The very nice man who did this to me, I think he was going for a British shag, but the main thing is – it’s not me.”

The stylist who did the haircut was reportedly referencing one of her previous haircuts, as she sported a more refined, simpler version of the style in the past. But this time, Emily was visibly annoyed with the outcome. In the video, Emily attempts to salvage the situation by parting the front fringe off to either side of her face.
However, Emily is not alone; we’ve all been in the same position. It’s a horrible feeling to leave the hair salon with a hairstyle you didn’t ask for. We tell ourselves in the mirror, ‘It’s really not that bad,’ while our friends console us, saying, ‘If you style it like that, you really can’t tell’.
How to style a bad haircut
Gem Schwartz, Founder of Taylor Rose Hair Extensions, explains the best way to conceal a bad haircut while you wait for it to grow out. She says, “If a haircut doesn’t go to plan or you were trying something new and it just doesn’t suit you, there are ways to soften the look while you wait for it to grow.”
Gem adds, “Cute side clips or headbands can help clip back super short bangs. Texturising products like salt sprays or dry shampoo add volume and disguise harsh lines. Waves or curls can help blend layers and create a softer overall appearance.
How to talk to your hairstylist
It’s also important to ensure that you speak up when getting a haircut, especially before it’s too late. No hairdresser wants a customer to leave the salon feeling unhappy with the service.
Gem explains, “When it comes to speaking with your hairdresser, communication is the most important part of the service. Hairdressers are usually very visual, and we can all have different interpretations of what a certain cut will look like.”
She continues, “So before your appointment, gather some inspiration photos, preferably with people who have a similar hair type, length and texture to yours. This makes it much easier to ensure you and your stylist are on the same page before a single strand is cut.”
While for now Emily might be sticking to wearing a cap or a slick back bun while she waits for her hair to grow out. It’s a great time to try out some new styling technique and have some fun experimenting, after all, hair does grow back.
