There are 10.6 million pet dogs in the UK, but what breed is the most popular? Veterinary nurse Gemma Renwick has revealed the top five favourite breeds of 2024
Over half of the UK’s households are pet lovers, with 51 percent owning an animal companion. Astonishingly, there are 10.6 million pet dogs in Britain, but which canine reigns supreme as the top dog?
In an unexpected twist, PDSA veterinary nurse Gemma Renwick has disclosed that the most common pooch patrolling UK homes is the crossbreed.
“They may not be a ‘breed’ as such, but they’re still the most popular choice for UK dog owners,” said vet nurse Gemma – and for good reason too.
“Crossbreeds are generally thought of as healthier than pedigree dogs,” she added, pointing to the potential health pitfalls of inbred pedigrees.
But the story doesn’t end there; the lineage of a crossbreed can still sway their well-being. “When considering adding a Crossbreed to your life, it’s important to make sure both parents are healthy,” Gemma advised.

“Be sure to look for a breeder who provides health testing for the parents for any specific breed health concerns.”
Chasing closely behind at second place in the popularity race this 2024 is the Labrador Retriever, notorious for their anything-goes diet.
Gemma noted: “Labs are typically sociable, fun-loving, devoted and affectionate family dogs, but are often used as working dogs.
“Having originally been bred as Gundogs, they require a good amount of exercise, scent work, and mental stimulation to remain happy and healthy.”
Labrador owners should be clued up on the most common health issues that can plague their furry friends, including joint problems, arthritis, and deteriorating eyesight.
The cockapoo has fetched itself third place in the rankings for the most popular dog of 2024, thanks to its growing fanbase.
“Cockapoos tend to be loving, intelligent and high energy,” Gemma said, but she warns potential owners about their high-maintenance fur.
“While their coat type can vary, Cockapoos are often prone to tangles and matts and will need regular grooming,” she revealed.
Not far behind, in fourth place, is the “intelligent and easy to train” German Shepherd, hailed as a great addition to any family.
Taking the fifth spot is the English Cocker Spaniel, described as “lively” and always ready for a game.
