‘Entitled stranger asked my baby’s name but my response enraged her’

A mum-to-be has had an awkward run-in with a stranger in a supermarket who demanded to know what she was going to call her daughter – and she wasn’t happy with the response she got

While some parents reveal their baby’s name before their birth, others choose to keep it under wraps until the arrival of their little one. However, one expectant mum was taken aback when a total stranger insisted on knowing her unborn daughter’s name.

The woman, who is 38 weeks pregnant, recounted how she was in the supermarket when a stranger began asking about her pregnancy and birthing plans. She shared on Reddit: “I went to the supermarket yesterday and was at the tills when an older couple (complete strangers) lined up behind me. The woman gave me a big smile. The woman said, ‘Wow, you look ready to pop!'”

She informed her that she only has a week left before her due date and was excited to meet her little girl.

Upon hearing this, the woman responded: “Lovely. Go on then, tell me the name.'”

However, as the woman had made a vow to herself not to disclose the name until after her daughter’s birth, she simply replied: “I’m sorry. I’m not telling anyone her name until after she’s born.”

Unwilling to accept no for an answer, the stranger persisted, exclaiming: “But that’s not fair! You have to tell me!”

Once again, she stood her ground and declined to share her chosen name.

Visibly irritated by this point, the woman blurted out: “But that doesn’t matter! You have to tell me! I might never see you again!”

Caught off guard, the expectant mum retorted: “Well, how about, if you do see me again, it’ll be after she’s born, so you can ask HER what her name is, okay?”

The stranger grumbled: “She’ll be a baby! She won’t tell me,” before storming off in a huff.

The woman added: “It was just a short exchange but it made me laugh. She was so adamant that I had to tell her – and that I was being mean to her by refusing!”.

One user commented on her post: “At least she didn’t demand to touch your belly. I hated that so f****** much.”

Another user chimed in: “Entitled much in some cultures it’s considered bad luck to speak the babies name before they are born I was nameless for a week till the spirits told my father what my name should be.”

A third user remarked: “Congratulations. ‘No’ is a complete sentence in its own right. Best wishes for the safe arrival of your baby girl, but can you update us with her name when she does arrive please, just think how upset that lady will be.”

Yet another user added: “Not going to lie, I’d find it weird if someone said oh I can’t tell you. But then I’d blink, recover, and go oh alright well best wishes.”
