Erik ten Hag closes in on first job since Man Utd exit but Arsenal icon poses issue

By staff11 May 2025No Comments4 Mins Read

Erik ten Hag has been out of a job since he was sacked by Manchester United in October 2024 after overseeing the team’s worst start to a Premier League season – and now the Dutchman could return to work at Bayer Leverkusen

Former Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag is closing in on his next job after reportedly being in the running to become the next Bayer Leverkusen manager, though he is said to be “neck and neck” with ex-Arsenal star Cesc Fabregas. Ten Hag has not coached since being axed by the Red Devils in October after guiding the team to their worst start in Premier League history this season.

His successor Ruben Amorim has been unable to galvanise the team since replacing the Dutchman, though he has led them to a Europa League final against Tottenham on May 21.

Ten Hag has been linked with a number of roles since leaving United but is still waiting for his return to the dugout but could stand to profit from Xabi Alonso’s departure from the Bundesliga side.

Alonso announced he would be leaving the club on Friday after guiding them to the Bundesliga and German Cup last season, with the Spaniard widely expected to replace Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid.

Leverkusen will want to continue the excellent work Alonso has done and German outlet Kicker claim that the club have narrowed down their search to either Ten Hag or Fabregas – who currently manages Serie A side Como.

Ten Hag endured plenty of criticism during his two years at United after overseeing some woeful displays and inconsistency, but his CV remains impressive with two cup wins during his time at Old Trafford – on top of five trophies at Ajax.

But Leverkusen may feel Fabregas is the more promising up-and-coming coach following impressive work at Como, helping them to 10th in the table after earning promotion last season.

The report adds that Erik ten Hag would demand a higher wage package than Fabregas – though the Spaniard would cost more to hire because the German outlet would have to pay Como compensation.

It’s believed Leverkusen would have to stump up around £10m to release him from his contract, which runs until 2028.

Whoever does replace Alonso will have big shoes to fill after he won the team their first Bundesliga title in their 119-year history, while also lifting the German Cup in the same system.

Announcing his departure on Friday, Alonso said: “This week, the club and I have agreed these will be my last two games as Leverkusen coach. This is the right moment to announce it because we have always had this good communication with the club.

‘We have to enjoy this moment with mixed emotions, it is emotional! I spoke to the players and the staff it was not easy. We’ve had a great connection and that’s been the key. They believed in me and they’ve followed me. I want to have a proper goodbye this weekend.’
