Manchester City striker Erling Haaland clearly enjoyed West Ham’s surprise 1-0 win over Arsenal on Saturday – and in particular the red card given to Myles Lewis-Skelly
Erling Haaland has continued his spat with Myles Lewis-Skelly by revelling in his red card against West Ham.
Lewis-Skelly was sent off in the second half of Arsenal’s damaging 1-0 defeat by the Hammers on Saturday for bringing down Mohammed Kudus. The 18-year-old was initially given a yellow card, but referee Craig Pawson upgraded it to a red after being directed to the pitchside monitor by VAR.
The Arsenal defender was deemed to have denied a clear goalscoring opportunity because David Raya was way off his line. His dismissal proved costly and hampered Arsenal, who were unable to respond, slipping further behind Liverpool in the Premier League title race.
It was a huge win for West Ham and their supporters enjoyed themselves afterwards, with some taking the opportunity to poke fun at Lewis-Skelly. In a picture posted on social media, two fans got into Haaland’s yoga pose outside the Emirates Stadium in a reference to the beef between the Manchester City striker and Arsenal defender.
Haaland clearly found it funny because he liked the photo on Instagram, adding another page to the back and forth between the two.
It all started back in September when Haaland appeared to ask the youngster “who the f*** are you?” during a fiery melee between Arsenal and City players. Lewis-Skelly didn’t back down then – and he took his first opportunity to fire back at the Norwegian earlier this month.
He celebrated his goal against City by whipping out Haaland’s trademark celebration, where he sits cross-legged on the floor, closes his eyes and holds his hands in a meditation pose. Arsenal won that game 5-1 and, with Lewis-Skelly’s strike the third of the goals, Haaland didn’t have a chance to respond. But he clearly enjoys the rivalry with Arsenal, even if City are struggling to back up the bluster this season.
Defeat against West Ham left Arsenal eight points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool, who face City on Sunday afternoon. Pep Guardiola’s side are nine points behind the Gunners in fourth and are fighting for a top-four place, rather than the title this season.
Mikel Arteta was asked about the impact the defeat would have on the title race and called on his players to keep going. “Hopefully, a positive one, because it’s already very negative what the result brings and the consequences to that, so hopefully very positive that we understand that we need to raise the level,” he said.
“It’s not in our hands. For me, I’m really, really annoyed by the things that are in our hands and we didn’t do as well as we possibly could and that’s the performance and the result today.”
