Staycations in the UK offer a hassle-free way to have fun without the stress of busy airports or long-haul travel. From rugged coastlines to tranquil lakes and towering peaks, the UK is packed with natural beauty and adventure right on your doorstep.

UK-based breaks are particularly popular with holidaymakers who like to embrace the great outdoors and unleash their adventurous spirit. A hotspot for high-octane holidays, from zip-lining over Welsh quarries to surfing world-class waves on Cornwall’s coast, there are plenty of places to explore.

As part of a recent Staycation Index report, Sykes Holiday Cottages have curated five of the UK’s most adventurous getaways, pairing stunning stays with adrenaline-fuelled activities. With a huge range of self-catering holiday homes, from cosy coastal cottages to modern city apartments, there are properties available across every region.

Alongside trusted names like Sykes Holiday Cottages, other major providers such as Booking.com and Holidaycottages.co.uk also offer thousands of unique stays.

For thrill seekers who can’t wait to get away, these top adventures await:

Gorge walking in the Peak District

Padley Gorge is a picturesque, ancient oak woodland nestled within the Peak District National Park. It forms part of the Longshaw Estate, which is owned and managed by the National Trust

Here, adventurers can scramble across ancient boulders, wade through crystal-clear streams and slip down natural waterslides made of rock in one of the Peak District’s most thrilling wild experiences.

Tucked away in the heart of Bakewell, The Aubrey is a chic three-bedroom retreat that blends period character with modern luxury. After a busy day in the great outdoors, sink into a deep bath, stretch out on a comfy king-sized bed, or head into Bakewell to wander cobbled streets to enjoy a fireside pint in a cosy pub.

Other places nearby include the dog-friendly Cattis Side Cottage in nearby Hathersage, the converted pub at the Old Bulls Head or the modern comfort of The Ridge in Bamford. For holidaymakers who would prefer a hotel stay, The George is an historic Derbyshire hotel in the heart of the Peak District.

Canoeing across Lake Windermere offers a peaceful yet invigorating way to explore the Lake District’s largest and most iconic lake. Paddle through the quiet bays and take in panoramic views of the surrounding fells for a truly unforgettable outdoor experience.

Middle Longlands is a charming glamping pod set in the Lake District. With its stylish modern décor and thoughtfully designed open-plan living space, this retreat offers couples a comfortable hideaway to relax in after a day of exploring.

Also close by, 2 Bridge Cottages is a cosy hideaway in the middle of the village. For families, Ford Barn has three bedrooms and a private walled gardens, while Town End Cottage sleeps up to eight guests in well appointed lodgings.

For holidaymakers who fancy something really different, the five-star Gilpin Hotel & Lake House has a champagne bar, spa, swimming pool and a fine dining restaurant for the more discerning adventurer.

Ride the waves in Newquay

Fistral Beach in Newquay is one of the UK’s top surfing spots, known for its consistent waves and vibrant surf culture. Whether you’re a beginner taking lessons or a seasoned pro chasing the perfect swell, it’s the ultimate destination for catching waves.

Little Beach Cabin is home to rustic wooden beams and a plush king-sized bed, creating a warm, restful space to unwind after a day on the water.

Newquay is a great place for friends and family to get together to experience the Cornish Riviera. For big groups stays, The White Manor House is a Cornish manor house set in three acres of private land. 14 St Georges Road is another large property offering well thought out accommodation across three floors.

Newquay is also home to Fistral Beach Hotel and Spa, an adult-only retreat overlooking the seafront and the Pentire Newquay Cornwall Hotel with a swimming pool and games room.

Try the world’s fastest zip line

Thrill-seekers won’t want to miss Zip World Penrhyn Quarry, home to Velocity 2—the world’s fastest zip line. Reaching speeds of over 100mph, it offers an unforgettable ride above Snowdonia’s dramatic and breathtaking landscapes.

Perched in an elevated spot in Menai Bridge, Swn Y Wylan boasts panoramic views across the Menai Strait. Its spacious garden and inviting interiors offer a peaceful base to unwind or sip your morning coffee before setting out to explore Snowdonia or nearby Bangor.

Alternatively, Craig y Don is an incredible country manor house that can sleep up to 20 guests, while Llety Eryri is a traditional stone cottage is Snowdonia.

Just a couple of miles down the road, Château Rhianfa is a Grade 2 listed villa with a private beach and panoramic views over the Menai Straits.

Climb or cycle the Nevis mountain range

Tick off a true UK bucket-list experience with a climb up Ben Nevis, Britain’s highest peak, or explore the wider Nevis Range, home to world-class hiking and mountain biking. From thrilling downhill rides to peaceful hill walks, the Scottish Highlands offer adventure at every turn.

Set against the stunning backdrop of Luskentyre Bay, Taigh Rona is a beautifully designed holiday home, perfect for larger groups of adventurers. Expansive windows flood the space with natural light and frame breathtaking views, while the open-plan living area creates a sociable setting for cooking, dining and unwinding together.

Other options include Seaview, a traditional detached 3 bedroom cottage on the west coast of the Highlands and Hotel Eilean Iarmain just a short ferry ride away on the Isle of Skye.

Sykes Cottages has an overall rating of 4.6 out of five-stars on Trustpilot.

One holidaymaker said: “The Sykes app is very easy to use and once your choice is made it’s also very easy to book. All the information from this point forward is readily available in the app. Can’t fault it.”

Another added: “Have used Sykes Holiday Cottages for years. No issues using the website to search for cottages, easy to book and pay, and good communication throughout the process.”

Sadly some guests were less impressed with the service. One disappointed booker said: “We have booked some amazing properties through Sykes but was very disappointed that when requesting an additional days stay they chose to charge £30 admin charge and weren’t prepared to compromise!”
