Espanyol vs Barcelona game stopped as driver mows down fans at stadium in horrific incident

By staff15 May 2025No Comments2 Mins Read

Barcelona travelled to Espanyol on Thursday night with a chance to wrap up the La Liga title but the game was marred by horrific scenes outside as a car drove into multiple people

A car drove into multiple people outside the stadium of Espanyol ahead of their La Liga fixture with Barcelona on Thursday night. A clip of the harrowing incident was shared on social media during the game.

People outside the stadium were seen running away as police moved towards the vehicle. The incident, which occurred before kick off, eventually led to the Spanish top-flight game being paused briefly, though play quickly resumed when it emerged nobody was seriously hurt.

A report from Mundo Deportivo outlines that the incident occurred shortly before kick-off and led to several ambulances being rushed to the scene.

The same report goes on to state that according to Catalan police, the incident was an accident and occurred when a female driver lost control of her vehicle.

Thirteen people are said to have suffered minor injuries. ITV commentator Sam Matterface explained that there had been no serious injuries during their coverage of the game.

Referee Cesar Soto Grado was seen speaking with police and officials near the side of the pitch during the brief pause in play, which occurred after a tannoy announcement.

Hansi Flick’s side will be crowned champions with a victory after a last-gasp comeback from Real Madrid 24 hours earlier denied them the Spanish title.

The two sides went in at the half-time break level with the score 0-0.
