Manchester United were beaten on Boxing Day and the pundits on MUTV are now calling for reinforcements in the transfer market with the team stuck in the bottom half
The pundits on MUTV claimed Manchester United should be in the market for new players are their latest reverse.
The club’s in-house channel airs coverage of every game and gives insight and opinion on the state of affairs at Old Trafford. Unlike an independent show, MUTV often tends to back the current group and is less critical of the players and the manager.
However, they saw Ruben Amorim’s side lose a fourth game in five outings on Boxing Day as they went down at Wolves. Familiar flaws, particularly from set pieces, were exposed with the team still in the bottom half of the Premier League.
Next month’s transfer window presents Amorim with the first chance to add to his squad – which is clearly in need of reinforcements. Despite millions being spent in the summer, the Red Devils are some way off the leading sides and both Danny Simpson and Sammy McIlroy want to see reinforcements.
“I’d surprised if he’s not saying that,” Simpson said when asked if Amorim would be telling Ineos he needs new signings. “I think there’s got to be some conversation had where he needs his own players. Or some that haven’t played a lot, but you need new players to come in.”
That was echoed by fellow pundit Sammy McIlroy, who said: “I totally agree with that. One or two, I’m not talking ‘oh we need four or five’ but even one or two at this stage. One or two could give you a lift.”
Amorim has made it clear his immediate priority is implementing his philosophy, which will lead to some short-term pain. The ex-Sporting Lisbon boss has not come in and demanded huge funds, which are believed to be in short supply, and instead wants to work with the current group.
He said: “I’m really focused on seeing my players, to understand my players and I think that is one of the problems of the club. We have to focus on what we have, we have to focus on the academy and also to have clear profiles of the players when you get them. It’s a lot of details you have to manage.
“We have international players, they are good players and we need time to teach our idea and then we will see. Because this is a massive club. If you don’t win, the coach goes, the players go. We have to improve as a team, we have to arrange a lot of things in our club before thinking about just buying or selling players. There’s a lot to do, so let’s focus on improving our players.”
