Ex-Premier League cult hero knocked out and left needing oxygen in boxing fight

By staff19 October 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

Two former Premier League stars went head-to-head in the boxing ring on Saturday night – and it’s safe to say that one came off much worse for wear than the other

14:59, 19 Oct 2025Updated 16:10, 19 Oct 2025

Ex-Premier League goalkeeper Paddy Kenny was left needing oxygen after being knocked out by Curtis Davies. Kenny and former Derby County defender Davies went up against each other in a charity boxing fight on Saturday.

However, there was nothing charitable about Davies’ performance as dominated Kenny from the get go. A combination of punches from Davies forced referee Wayne Alexander to enforce a standing eight-count.

Despite this, Kenny, 47, bravely continued, only to be left crashing to the floor with a huge right hand from Davies. Kenny, who made more than 700 appearances in his football career, tried to make it to his feet but Alexander opted to call it there. Kenny then needed oxygen after the brutal stoppage as Davies celebrated the win.

Speaking after his success, Davies, 40, said: “The game plan was to stick to the jab and try and keep him at range because he’s a shorter guy than me, probably not as quick on his feet as me but he’s a big, powerful guy. I wanted to be the one to get the first shot and if I’m honest the first shot took his soul.

“First shot I caught him with my right hand took his soul and when I knew it was over. It should have been stopped a good 30 seconds before it was.

“Really pleased, I’ve worked hard for this, it’s bittersweet, I love Paddy to bits, I didn’t want to have to knock him about but that’s what we’re here to do. It’s all for charity, yes, but I enjoyed that win.”

Davies, who totalled more than 650 appearances in his club career, then called out YouTube-turned-boxer Jake Paul and Misfits, the celebrity-style crossover boxing scene. He said: “Misfits and Jake Paul, whoever wants it!”

Stake organised the event on behalf of four charities and the aim was to raise £500,000. All funds were donated to Playskill, Sport In Mind, Willow Foundation, and Helping Hands.

Also on the card, ex-Reading front man Leroy Lita beat David Noble to win a decision, while former Tottenham midfielder David Bentley lost to Chelsea coach Jody Morris.
