Exact date Aldi will shut every UK store for three days confirmed

Aldi will close on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day to give its staff more time to spend with loved ones this festive season

Aldi has confirmed it will close all of its stores on Boxing Day once again.

It has become somewhat of a tradition for the budget supermarket to keep its doors closed on December 26 – and this year will be no different.

Aldi will close on Christmas Day and then reopen as usual on December 27. The supermarket says it wants to give staff more time to spend with friends and family during the festive season.

Its stores will also be closed on New Year’s Day as usual, reopening once again on January 1, 2026. Opening hours will vary in the days leading up to Christmas.

Aldi will operate extended hours to ensure customers can stock up ahead of the big day.

Rebecca Heley, Communications Director at Aldi UK, said: “Christmas is a special time, and we want to ensure all of our colleagues have the opportunity to relax and enjoy it with their loved ones. That’s why all Aldi stores will be closed on Boxing Day this year.

“We know how hard colleagues work to deliver an amazing Christmas for our customers, and this is one small way of saying thank you.”

It comes after Aldi revealed it has reduced over 900 prices across its range of products in recent months. The supermarket says it has invested more than £300million in price cuts since the start of 2025, including fresh fruit and vegetables, bread, dairy and household essentials.

Aldi has also once again been named the cheapest supermarket by Which? consumer champions. The consumer group revealed a shop with 75 items cost £127.92 on average at Aldi in August 2025.

This was 38p cheaper than the same shop at Lidl with its loyalty scheme Lidl Plus, which cost £128.30 on average. The list of 75 items included both branded and own-brand items, such as Birds Eye Peas, Hovis bread, milk and butter.

The supermarket recently published an updated list of priority locations across the UK where it wants to open new stores. Each site should be able to accommodate a 20,000 sq ft store with around 100 parking spaces and ideally be near a main road with good visibility and access.

The supermarket is also on the lookout for sites to accommodate its Aldi Local store format in Central London in zones one and two, which typically have a minimum size of 5,000 sq ft of trading space, along with an additional 3,000 sq ft of ancillary space.
