Expert names 99p tool that could slash your energy bills by £350

By staff21 September 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

The weather is getting cold very quickly and that means energy bills are bound to soar – and with the cost of living also soaring – there’s one tool which could save you hundreds

The temperature is getting colder rapidly and that means energy costs are set to rocket – and with living expenses also climbing – there’s one gadget which could save you hundreds.

Rather than frantically searching for methods to avoid financial ruin – you can invest 99p that could save Britons up to £350 this winter – Just a basic radiator bleeding key will provide the straightforward solution you’ve been seeking.

These keys guarantee your radiators operate efficiently by expelling trapped air, eliminating cold patches, and preventing boilers from working overtime.

“Bleeding your radiators is one of the simplest and most cost-effective ways to cut energy bills. It only takes a few minutes and a tiny investment, but it can make a huge difference when the heating season hits.” explains Glen Peskett, DIY expert at circular saw blade supplier, Saxton Blades.

Glen advises that bleeding your radiators just before the chilly weather arrives is ideal timing – at the beginning of autumn. He said: “This way, your system is running at maximum efficiency when you need it most.”

How to tackle it

  • Switch off your heating and allow the radiators to cool down.
  • Find the bleed valve positioned at the top of each radiator.
  • Insert the key and rotate anticlockwise until air escapes with a hissing sound and water flows consistently.
  • Seal the valve, examine boiler pressure, and refill if required.
Just a quick twist can keep your bills cut(Image: Getty Images)

Its easy to get your radiators running on tilt – It’s all about the air, or rather, the lack of it.

“Air trapped inside radiators stops hot water from circulating properly, leaving some areas of your home cold while forcing your boiler to burn more energy.”

Unwanted air pockets can cause your heating to be patchy and inefficient. But there’s a simple fix “By simply turning the bleed valve with a bleeding key, trapped air escapes, allowing your heating system to work efficiently, and saving you money.”

A quick twist could see your rooms cosy and your bills cut.

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to cutting costs. Dialling down your thermostat by just 1°C might not sound much, but it can trim up to £90 off your annual heating bill.

Don’t overlook the little things either, like sealing any draughty spots around doors and windows to keep the warmth where it belongs. Plus, popping reflective panels behind your radiators can bounce back heat into your living spaces, making every penny on that energy bill count.
