A cleaning expert has warned that if you store your bedsheets in the wrong place or fold them incorrectly, your sheets could end up with a musty smell – and even mould in some cases
A cleaning expert has spilled the beans on a common mistake that could be leaving your bedsheets with a musty stench – or even worse – mould.
Despite feeling bone-dry post-wash, sheets can harbour sneaky moisture, leading to a damp odour if stored incorrectly or folded in haste. Nobody fancies snoozing in a bed that reeks of mustiness, so a cleaning ace from Happy Beds, Sarah Jubb, is sounding the alarm on the no-nos that could be fouling up your linen’s freshness.
According to The Sun, she’s dishing out her savvy advice on how to stash your sheets to dodge any funky fungi and keep them smelling as crisp as a breezy spring morning. Sarah warns: “It is difficult to ensure your bedsheets stay fresh as they have come out of the washing machine and been put away in their designated spot.”
She points out that without a dedicated airing cupboard, battling the stale scent can be a real headache. “This is because keeping your bedding in a place without air can lead to mould due to moisture developing, creating that musty smell,” she cautions.
To nip mould in the bud, make sure those sheets are thoroughly dry before you fold ’em up. And here’s a pro tip: avoid the bathroom cupboard for storage – its humid vibes are a mould magnet.
“Instead, an airing or linen cupboard is the best place as it’s a dry and dark area,” she said. Adding that tucking them away in a cupboard under your bed can be quite clever too.
However, she warns against the trendy social media craze of stowing them in large plastic containers. Such airtight units turn into mould’s favourite playground due to lack of airflow, so it’s a no-go for bedding storage.
The expert’s final advice? Give those sheets a weekly wash -sure, it’s a bit of a chore but is absolutely key to keeping them crisp and fresh.
