Experts swear by these Sunday hacks to keep pests in your home at bay

By staff24 August 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

Deep cleaning your house is a part of self-care and a ritual for many every weekend – however there may be places in your home you’re missing and it’s welcoming in some unwanted guests

Sunday is the perfect time to give your house a little spruce up – and an expert has revealed some of the easiest hacks to make the most of your ‘#sundayreset’.

Tidying and cleaning your home is the perfect type of self-care, helping you clear out your physical and mental space, and with the change in weather and Autumn on the way, now is the perfect time to change up your routine and keep unwanted pests away.

According to James Rhoades, pest expert at Thermopost, there are some simple techniques to help deter them from your home and keep it clean.

Vacuum regularly

The expert said a thorough vacuum has the benefit of refreshing your space while also being one of the most effective ways to remove pests such as carpet moths.

Carpet moths are commonly found in undisturbed areas such as under furniture, along skirting boards, behind curtains, and in corners of rooms, so he advises to focus your vacuuming on these hidden spots where lint, pet hair, and fibres accumulate and added that once you’re done, always empty your vacuum immediately to avoid bringing anything back into the home.

Declutter your home

Clutter doesn’t just impact how calm your space feels; it also provides the perfect hiding spots for pests, the expert noted. Items such as boxes, piles of clothing, and old papers create warm, undisturbed spaces where pests can thrive. He suggested using your Sunday reset to work through each room, deciding what to keep and what to clear out.

For maximum decluttering, you can also store items in sealed containers and dispose of anything unused to make your space less inviting to pests.

Focus on bedding and sleeping areas

Using your Sunday routine to give your sleeping space a deep clean is one of the best ways to prevent pests like bed bugs from settling in. Start by stripping your bed and washing all bedding in hot water, James also advised to check your mattress and bed frame for any signs of pests, including dark spots, shed shells or bite marks. Flipping your mattress and vacuuming underneath can also help to disrupt pest life cycles and keep your bedroom fresh and hygienic.

Refresh your wardrobe and clothing

Many people forget to clean out the backs of drawers or the bottoms of wardrobes, but clothes left undisturbed for long periods can easily become hiding places for clothes moths James said.

Rotate your clothing, wash anything that hasn’t been worn in a while, and give items a shake before putting them away. Use your Sunday reset as an opportunity to declutter and organise your wardrobe, allowing more airflow and fewer dark corners where pests might hide.

Wash and clean pet bedding and toys

Pets can easily bring fleas into the home without you realising. Their bedding and toys are common hotspots for infestations, especially if they are rarely cleaned.

Include pet items in your Sunday reset by washing their bedding on high heat and scrubbing any hard toys. Your pet will be happier, and you’ll reduce the risk of pests spreading around your home.
