‘Family won’t accept my fiancé or come to our wedding after one detail of his past’

A woman has shared her heartache after her family turned their back on her after she introduced them to the man she wanted to marry – and people say they had every right to

You don’t get to choose who you fall in love with – instead, you just hope you’ll live a happy life together. But one woman’s dream wedding has been shattered as her parents and siblings are in two minds about attending her special day.

The 28-year-old explained how she is set to marry her fiancé, John, 26, but nobody in her family originally supported their relationship as he used to date her younger sister, Kelly, 24. She said on Reddit: “Five years ago I met my fiancé, John, who was dating my sister, Kelly. Long story short John lived an hour away and was looking at apartments closer to DC since he had just graduated. So I suggested my apartment and he ended up taking it.

“This led to John and I spending a lot of time together (more than John and Kelly as she was an hour away still in her senior year of college at the time.

“John and I quickly realised we are soulmates and best friends. We both felt guilty as hell but we listened to our heart. He broke up with Kelly and we decided to give things a shot.

After hearing the news, her sister went no contact, while her parents with little communication, with her dad even claiming they’d “break up within the year”.

She added: “He [her dad] also said some very mean things calling me a h*e and that hurt. A few years has passed and I’m now engaged to my best friend and soulmate.

“My dad is the only one who respects our relationship which is ironic because he was the one who said the most nasty things to me. My dad said at this point it’s clear it’s real love. Yet the rest of the family still won’t get on board.”

However, her sister is still no contact and her mum and other siblings keep their distance and keep conversations to a minimum still.

She said: “At what point will people realise this wasn’t us just being lustful and having a cheap thrill, it’s a real relationship.

“I got so many people saying they undecided on coming to the wedding and it really hurts. I’m marrying my best friend and want to celebrate it with the people I love the most.”

Commenting on her post, one user said: “People don’t care about you and your ‘soulmate’. They care you betrayed your sister and it seems like you don’t even care.

“Like they’re all just collateral damage in your grand love story. Gross. Get your head out of your a**.

“They aren’t obligated to validate your affair just because two selfish people have decided to spend their lives together. I am so glad you aren’t my sister.”

Another user added: “So your soulmate is willing to cheat with his girlfriend’s sister? Ick.”

A third user said: “You betrayed your sister, there’s no coming back from that. Accept that when you chose him, you lost the ones you hurt in the process.”
