Further details of FIFA’s inaugural Club World Cup, which will include Chelsea and Manchester City this summer, have been revealed as teams prepare to head to the United States
The winners of this summer’s FIFA Club World Cup tournament could bank a whopping $125million (£96.8m) in prize money – making it one of the most lucrative club football competition’s in the world.
A host of elite clubs, including Chelsea and Manchester City from the Premier League, will participate in the United States this summer. And while the winners will take home an enormous bounty, all 32 clubs will be handsomely compensated for taking part.
A sum of $525m (£406.8) will be divided between the clubs, with the exact split determined by sporting and commercial criteria. That means Manchester City, who boast a far bigger fanbase and commercial value than others in the competition, will receive more in a model that FIFA have worked closely with the European Club Association on.
There is also a further $475m (£368.1m) on offer on a performance-related basis. That means the club who racks up the most wins over the tournament will bank more cash, with a maximum pot of $125m (£96.8m) available.
Furthermore, all revenue generated from the tournament will be redistributed into club football through prize money, rather than FIFA’s coffers. It’s hoped an additional $250m (£193.7m) will be raised for club football around the world, with further details on these payments expected soon.

He added: “I think it’s going to be great. It’s going to be unique. Playing this type of major tournament with your club is different to what’s been done in the past but I think it’s going to be a great experience. Going out to the US, as well, a year before the World Cup will be a great chance to get to know some of the stadiums and get to know the fans out there.
“It’s going to be a really great tournament. As always, when it’s the first of any type of tournament, people are wondering how it’s going to go. But I’m really excited for it.”
