Fire TV Stick shut down today as all users blocked from popular streaming app

Fire TV Stick owners have lost access to a popular streaming app today.

If Mondays weren’t bad enough already, there’s more bad news. It has been confirmed that a popular streaming app, which offered free access to a wide range of content, has now officially closed its doors for good. The change means owners of Fire TV Sticks and other streaming devices will no longer get access from today.

So what’s closed down and how will it affect you?

The app in question is Amazon’s Freevee platform. This long-running service has been a popular choice for those not wanting to fork out on monthly subscription fees.

Until today, users could watch shows such as Jury Duty, Alex Rider, Bosch: Legacy and Hell’s Kitchen USA, with paying as all content is supported by adverts.

However, from September 1, Freevee’s huge catalogue of content has now switched over to Prime Video instead.

That means those using Freeview will need to download the Prime Video app and log in using their Amazon account.

“Prime Video is the new exclusive home for Freevee TV shows, movies and Live TV,” Freevee customers have been told in a pop-up in the Freevee app.

“The Freevee app will be accessible until August 2025.

“Continue watching your favourite Freevee Originals and our library of hit movies, shows, and live TV on Prime Video for free, no subscription needed. Download Prime Video to get started and sign in with your Amazon account.”

It’s worth noting that there are no extra charges to pay and things will still be free. However, Freevee users will now see all available boxsets and movies that will require a Prime subscription or a one-off fee.

This move is possibly aimed at tempting Freevee users into subscribing to Prime Video or splashing out on a movie rental for the night.

If you already have a Prime Video account, this is good news as it should now be easier to browse all available Amazon content in one app, instead of also having to surf Freevee as you do at the moment.
