Aside from the sheer satisfaction of fresh sheets, there are also other benefits to washing bedding regularly – such as needing to replace it less often – which can save some serious money
There’s nothing quite like the feeling of fresh bedding.
You’re all clean from a shower, and you’re ready for a perfect night’s sleep – pure bliss. Besides the sheer joy of fresh sheets, there are other perks to washing your bedding regularly, such as not having to replace it as often, which can save you a pretty penny.
The Sleep Foundation says that the average person spends between 49 to 60 hours a week in bed (sometimes more!), meaning your comfy sleep haven can quickly become a breeding ground for dirt, dust mites, dead skin cells, and sweat if you don’t wash your bedding frequently enough.
The London Fire Brigade has issued a warning that a build-up of residue from emollients or skin creams on bedding can increase its flammability, particularly if you spend long periods in bed due to limited mobility. As a general rule, Which? suggests washing bedding covers once a week – that includes bed sheets, pillowcases and duvet covers – at 60 degrees for most fabrics. However, sheets may need washing more often, depending on how you use your bed.
And if you’re an allergy sufferer, you might want to wash your bedding more often as it can help to ease your annoying symptoms. But there are steps you can take to keep your bedding as fresh as possible between washes. A study by North London Waste Authority (NLWA) discovered that a quarter of people let their pets sleep in their beds, and a fifth of people regularly eat in bed.
Shockingly, one in 10 people reported actually brushing their teeth in bed – which can cause some serious stains. If you refrain from the above, your bed sheets can stay nicer for longer without you having to be concerned.
