An electrical expert has shared the five household “offenders” causing the most significant spikes in energy bills, along with tips for reducing their costly impact
With the soaring cost of living, learning how to slash your energy bills is crucial.
An expert points out that common household habits like leaving appliances on standby can cost you a fortune.
Chris Madikian, an electrical whizz at The Local Electrician, has identified five “key offenders” that could be causing the biggest jumps in your energy costs.
The specialist also offers tips to mitigate their expensive effects, offering a chance for families to save cash as we move into the New Year.
1. Washer-dryer
At the top of the list is the washer-dryer, which Madikian says could set you back around £104.13 annually due to their intense energy consumption, reports the Express.
The pro detailed: “These appliances account for approximately 12 percent of a typical energy bill, making them among the most energy-hungry in any household.
“The high usage of water and electricity required to heat it, combined with lengthy cycles, makes these appliances expensive to operate.”
His advice? “Opt for cold-water washes, run full loads, use heated clothes airers and, if possible, air-dry clothes to significantly cut down on energy consumption.”
2. Tumble dryer
Next on the list is the tumble dryer. As the mercury drops, many rely on this appliance, but it eats up about 11 percent of your typical energy bill because of the hefty power needed to dry laundry effectively.
Considering alternatives like heated clothes airers or dehumidifiers is smart, especially when running a tumble dryer might nearly cost you £100 a year.
3. Chest freezer
The expert explained: “A chest freezer operates continuously and uses a significant amount of energy to maintain a steady temperature, accounting for eight percent of an average household’s energy expenditure.”
Advising on efficiency, they added, “Regularly defrost your freezer, ensure door seals are intact, and maintain an optimal -18C for maximum efficiency.”
4. Fridge-freezer
Highlighting another key appliance, the fridge-freezer, known for pushing up energy bills, they stressed it must run constantly. The expert suggested keeping the fridge at 4C and minimising door openings for efficient usage.
5. Washing machine
Washing machines also came under scrutiny as they absorb a lot of energy, especially during hot-water cycles, amounting to roughly seven percent of home energy costs. Tips to save money include washing at lower temperatures, using full loads, and skipping the pre-wash settings.
Regarding overall savings, the electrical pro noted: “As energy costs continue to rise, being aware of the most energy-intensive appliances in our homes, and knowing how to use them efficiently, can lead to substantial savings.
“By making small adjustments like washing clothes in cold water or adjusting fridge temperatures, homeowners can not only lower their bills but also reduce their environmental impact.”
They concluded with advice on daily device usage, “It’s all about making smarter choices with the devices we rely on every day.”
