Five easiest dog breeds to care for and recommended by expert

By staff22 September 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

If you’re thinking of getting a dog, it’s important to choose a breed that fits seamlessly into your lifestyle. Here are five breeds that are often considered the easiest to care for

There’s a reason dogs are known as man’s best friend. Our four-legged companions are faithful, affectionate, and frequently bring joy to our lives – and have been doing so for thousands of years.

Whether they’re racing about with the zoomies in the park, snuggling up at the end of the settee or pleading for a morsel of your toast, dogs have a knack for embedding themselves into the very heart of family life.

For many people, the prospect of bringing home a puppy is a fantasy come true, but as with any family, it’s not always smooth sailing.

Dogs can be wonderful but there’s no getting away from the fact they are frequently a challenge, and after all, not every breed is identical, and some dogs demand far more time, training and attention than others.

Much of this isn’t the pooches’ fault, with many working dogs bred to perform a specific job, being confined at home is quite literally not in their nature, reports the Express.

So whilst you may be longing for a Labrador or a spaniel, it’s crucial to recognise that they may require a little more effort than some others.

A dog that slots seamlessly into your lifestyle will not only be happier and healthier, but will also make life as an owner far easier and more enjoyable.

Naturally, “easy” doesn’t mean effortless. All dogs need care, exercise and affection.

Nevertheless, for first-time owners, hectic families, or those simply seeking a pet that’s a little less high-maintenance, some breeds are well-known for being more straightforward than others. One dog expert from Pumpkin has shared five breeds often considered the easiest to care for.

Basset Hound

The adorable, floppy ears of a Basset Hound are instantly recognisable and contribute significantly to the breed’s charm. Importantly for first-time owners, the breed can often be patient, loyal and even lazy.

They are more than happy curled up on a sofa, and a moderate daily walk will be more than enough to tire them out.

Boston Terriers

Perfect for people who live in a city or an apartment but still want a pooch. The experts added: “While they have a bit more pep in their step than other low-maintenance dog breeds, regular playtime or a trip to the dog park should be more than enough to tire them out. When they’re in the mood, these pups love to snuggle on a couch or under a blanket with you.

Dachshund

Although these dogs may be small in size, they have big heart and are always looking for an adventure. They do need regular exercise, but because of their little legs, this doesn’t have to be far.

Italian Greyhound

Great for living in a flat or for young people wanting a dog who can keep up with their busy and quiet times, and an Italian Greyhound can be perfect. Essentially just a pocket-sized greyhound, the breed is more affectionate and sensitive than their larger cousins.

Maltese

Maltese are the ultimate lap dogs. They can be remarkably clever, but most importantly, they crave attention. They can also be effortlessly trained and extremely flexible to suit your way of life. The experts add: “They’re also considered hypoallergenic dogs, with little to no shedding – a dream come true for allergy sufferers.”
