As we enter 2025, January is already turning out to be snowy, wet and cold — but some short flights from the UK could land you in some sunny, hot, sandy destinations
As the UK enters January, many regions across the country are anticipating cold weather, with some areas experiencing snow already.
Many parts of the UK are under yellow and amber warnings of snow and ice from the Met Office, and as the temperatures seem to be staying cold, heading somewhere hot in January may be the best way to make the month not-so-blue.
Here are five destinations to catch some heat and sun in January, if you’re looking to get away from it all for a while.
Madeira, Portugal
Dubbed the Hawaii of Europe, Madeira is the ideal January escape boasting average temperatures across the month of 20C.
The archipelago comprises of four islands, off the northwest coast of Africa. The main island — Madeira — is volcanic, with high cliffs and pebbly beaches. Highlights include hiking up Pico Ruivo, exploring the tropical gardens at Monte Palace, and touring local vineyards which showcase the region’s rich winemaking history.
Madeira is also well known for its wine and the island offers many guided tours, including the wine lodges of Funchal. Alternatively, head on Blandy’s vintage tour, where visitors will try some of the finer wines.
Marrakech, Morocco
Marrakech is a great destination to escape the January cold. Whilst the weather is mild, the average daily temperatures range from 6C and 19C. In addition to the warmer temperatures, Marrakech boasts seven hours of sunshine per day.
If heading to Marrakech in January, on January 11 is the Independence Manifesto Day. On January 11, 1944, dozens of Moroccan nationalists signed the manifesto that called for the country’s full independence and sovereignty over its territories occupied by foreign powers. This was a turning point for Moroccan nationalism and since has been celebrated each year.
To celebrate, people will gather in groups, cheer in parades and have street food which is characteristic of the country.
Fuerteventura, Spain
Fuerteventura is the second largest of Spain’s Canary Islands, and boasts an average daily temperature maximum of 23C in January, and a minimum of 15C. The Canary Islands are primarily known for being a popular holiday destination, but if you scratch below the surface of bars and party destinations, there are multiple beaches, coves and activities such as windsurfing, to explore.
Sharm el sheikh, Egypt
Average temperatures in Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt, in January range between 20C and 24C. The average sea temperature is also 23C. Rain is limited to about one to five millimetres for the month, and there is around eight hours of sunshine a day. For those who do not like the dark morning and dark early evenings, Sharm el Sheikh provides a great getaway to make the most of some sun.
Whilst the destination may take a bit longer to get to (five-and-a-half hour flight from Manchester), it is worth it for the sandy beaches, clear waters and coral reefs. Naama Bay is full of bars and restaurants to explore and a palm tree-lined promenade. In addition, Ras Muhammad National Park is a major diving destination, with marine life around the Shark and Yolanda reefs and the Thistlegorm wreck.
Lanzarote, Spain
Slightly closer to the UK is Lanzarote, in Spain. In January, Lanzarote can be quite mild, but can also reach a maximum temperature of 22C and the average rainfall across the month is on average one millimetre. The sea is not too chilly in January either, with an average temperature of 19C.
The Canary Islands are an all year-round destination, so you will still be able to experience the same activities and attractions as if you were to visit in the summer, just with slightly fewer people.
