A flight attendant has revealed why she hates serving a particular drink on planes and has urged passengers to stop ordering it – and it’s not just because it can cause bloating
A flight attendant has spilled the beans on why crew members grimace whenever a passenger requests a certain beverage while cruising at altitude.
Jet, who doubles as a blogger sharing her in-flight experiences, has implored travellers to steer clear of fizzy drinks during their aerial journeys. It’s not the beverages themselves that are the problem, but rather the hassle they present to flight attendants when they serve them up to flyers. In her online diary, Jet divulged that “soft drinks foam up a lot more when poured out of a can”, which means she has “to sit and wait for the bubbles to fall before I can continue pouring”.
This becomes particularly time-consuming when there’s a queue of passengers all hankering for carbonated refreshments, leading her to start pouring, take other orders, and then return to finish off the initial drink servings. And there’s more to it than just the inconvenience.

The cabin’s arid atmosphere is another factor to consider, as indulging in fizzy drinks or alcohol can exacerbate dehydration, potentially making you feel quite poorly. Moreover, the effervescence in these drinks can lead to bloating and indigestion – neither of which are welcome companions on a long-haul flight.
So, while your main concerns when ordering mid-flight might typically revolve around cost and whether the hunger or thirst justifies the expense, flight attendants suggest there’s more to ponder over when choosing your in-flight refreshment.
TikTok’s very own cabin crew influencer, Brodie Capron, known as @brodie. capron on the platform, has recently taken to the social media stage to bust some of the most prevalent myths about in-flight tap water.
The question of whether it’s safe to stick to bottled water on planes is a common one, especially with whispers that the onboard water filters are rarely given a good scrub. However, Brodie, who works for Virgin Australia, put these rumours to rest by assuring that their tap water is indeed drinkable.
She confidently stated: “Is the water safe to drink? Yes, it is. It’s filtered, and it’s clean.” On the flip side, fellow flight attendant Deja, who shares her insights under the TikTok handle @i. amdejaa, casts doubt over the cleanliness of plane-stored liquids.

Her advice to travellers is clear: “When you are travelling on an aeroplane please don’t drink coffee or tea,” and she didn’t stop there, adding hot chocolate to the list of beverages to avoid mid-flight. Deja alleges that the “water tanks on the aeroplane are never cleaned, and they are very disgusting”.
To circumvent any concerns about the potential filth in the aircraft’s water tank, she recommends passengers prepare their own hot drinks at the airport. She suggests grabbing a cup of hot water post-security check-in at the terminal, which should pose no issues with liquid restrictions, allowing passengers to enjoy their beverage without worrying about any hidden nasties.
