Flight attendant Kat Kamalani shares essential hotel tips for safety and hygiene, from keeping your room secure to checking for bed bugs — and one thing you should never say at check-in
When checking into a hotel, it’s easy to focus on things like your room key and the view.
But according to flight attendant Kat Kamalani, there are a few critical safety tips every traveller should follow to ensure a secure and comfortable stay. In a recent TikTok video, Kat shared some clever advice that could help avoid unnecessary risks while travelling.
One of the most important tips Kat offers is not to reveal your room number in public. Whether you’re chatting with hotel staff or other guests, “Never say your room number out loud,” she warns. It’s easy to forget the potential risks of sharing this information. In crowded areas, someone could overhear and use it to track down where you’re staying.
Kat also offers some other tips for keeping safe and making sure your hotel room has been cleaned.
Check your room
Once you’re inside your room, don’t rush to unpack. Kat recommends making sure there’s no one hiding behind the door or inside the space. She says: “Always make sure there’s nobody behind you when you’re going into your room.”. Once inside, take a quick look under the bed and behind the curtains to ensure no one is lurking.
Lock the doors
Security should be your top priority. “Lock the doors,” Kat says, but don’t stop there. Engage the top lock or deadbolt as well for extra protection.
Bed bugs
“Check for bed bugs,” she urges. Inspect the corners of the mattress and bed frame for any signs. Kat also suggests removing decorative pillows and top covers as they are rarely washed.
Don’t put your bag on the bed
After a long journey, it can be tempting to toss your bag on the bed, but Kat strongly advises against it. “Your bag has been on the floor of the airport, it’s disgusting,” she points out. Keep your luggage off the bed by placing it on a rack or table.
A clever trick for food storage
If your hotel room lacks a fridge and you need to store food, don’t worry. Kat has a simple solution: “If you don’t have a fridge, put your food in an ice bucket.” It’s an effective way to keep your food cool, especially if you’re planning to store drinks or snacks overnight.
By following these simple habits, you can avoid common hotel mishaps and keep yourself safe and make your hotel stay a stress-free experience.
