Flight attendant says there are ‘unspoken rules’ every passenger should follow

By staff9 September 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

When it comes to air travel, there are a few unspoken rules you’re expected to follow when 30,000 feet up in the skies – but not everyone does, according to one flight attendant

When it comes to flying, there are certain unwritten rules that passengers are expected to adhere to in order to make the journey smoother for everyone.

However, flight attendant Barbara ‘Barbie Bac’ Bacilieri, 29, has observed that not all travellers respect these norms – something that complicates her work and can lead to problems at 30,000 feet.

The YouTube personality has advised flyers to keep their so-called humorous remarks to themselves, recounting an incident where a passenger quipped she could “eat them” if the plane crashed, referencing the harrowing tale of Society of the Snow.

In this true account, which inspired a film, a Uruguayan rugby team’s plane went down in a desolate area of the Andes, leading to their resorting to cannibalism to stay alive.

From a practical standpoint, she recommends keeping high heels packed away, noting they’re a pain to walk in at the airport and pose a risk during emergencies on board.

She explained: “I never wear heels… in an evacuation, you would have to take them off so you don’t damage the slide.”

Barbara also commented on the rush passengers feel to board the aircraft, emphasising that if you’re already seated in the departure lounge, there’s no need to queue up for your seat.

Barbara shared her personal approach: “Why queue to board if you’re going to have to stand around waiting for so long?

“I prefer to wait until the end for everyone to get on and then I go quietly.”

Discussing methods to ‘stay hygienic’ whilst airborne, she advises travellers to steer clear of lavatories when there are mysterious puddles on the floor.

Additionally, she highlighted how, whilst the aircraft blankets are laundered between journeys, they’ve previously been utilised by countless passengers.

Generally speaking, she encourages flyers to mind their own business, contact cabin crew if issues arise, wear suitable attire for their trip, and maintain an upbeat demeanour throughout their travels.

This follows revelations from a flight attendant who disclosed the ‘coded language’ crew members employ to discuss passengers directly in front of them.

Air hostess Jennie, recognised as @jeenie. weenie across social platforms, exposed the real significance behind airline staff’s covert terminology at altitude – including the meanings of terms such as ‘bob’ and ‘flip flop’.

During her video, she explained: “When you hear flight attendants say Tom Cruise, we use this as a trick to remember where tea and coffee goes. Tom Cruise – T and C. Tea here and coffee here.”
