Flight attendant shares important reason to wash hair before you step on plane

By staff7 October 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

A flight attendant has shared that there’s something you need to do before you board your next flight, and that’s wash your hair. So do you agree with the frequent flyer’s golden rule?

Considering getting on your flight without freshly washed hair? Think again. A flight attendant has listed the grooming steps that are important to carry out before you fly.

Cabin crew member Sille Rydell explained that washing your hair is one of the things you can do “for your seat-mate and yourself”. What’s more, she also divulged what you should avoid wearing. While your “outfit might be airport chic”, she asked: “Will it survive turbulence, tiny bathrooms, and 10 hours in the same seat?”

If you want to fly with comfort and good manners in mind, you should also consider following nine pieces of advice that have been approved by the flight attendant. These are:

1. Avoid flowy pants or long skirts

Sille shared that if you wear things that touch the “bathroom floor,” then you may be left regretting it due to how gross the floor can get.

2. Avoid strong perfumes

Everyone likes to smell good. But while your signature scent might be your favourite smell in the world, Sille said someone else might not appreciate it as much.

She wrote: “Smells linger in the cabin — and not everyone loves your signature scent at 38,000 feet, some people even have allergies”.

3. Do take a shower and wash your hair before

Just because you washed your hair three days ago and it still looks good isn’t a good enough reason for Sille not to wash it again.

She fumed: “Dirty hair, no shower, no shame? A quick shower = the best pre-boarding ritual. Do it for your seatmate… and yourself”.

4. Do wear compression socks

If you’re on a “long haul flight,” Sille said you’re “missing out” if you don’t wear compression socks.

They help improve blood circulation in the legs by applying gentle pressure, which can reduce swelling, prevent the formation of blood clots, and decrease the risk of developing varicose veins.

Many people find that wearing compression socks helps alleviate feelings of tiredness or heaviness in the legs, especially after standing or sitting for extended periods.

5. Never go barefoot

“Just…please don’t. Especially not in the lavatory,” she fumed, saying that it’s disgusting to not have shoes on because you can never be 100% sure about what may be on the floor.

6. Don’t wear wired bras

Comfort is key when you’re on a plane, so “underwire + pressurised cabin for hours = major regret”.

Instead, Sille said that “soft and comfy” is something you should opt for every single time.

7. Don’t wear one-piece outfits

That all-in-one catsuit vibe might look slinky and sexy for the club, but not when you’re “half naked in a turbulence-shaking lavatory”.

So Sille pointed out you may be left regretting your decisions. Opt for something like a comfy but chic tracksuit instead.

8. Avoid excessive jewellery and belts

Sille shared that you should aim to “pack” your jewellery and belts instead of wearing them, because you may experience delays at security if you’re wearing too much bling.

9. Don’t wear ultra-tight leggings and jeans

Leggings and jeans might look really good, but they’re not worth being uncomfortable on your flight.

Sille said: “Cabin pressure makes your body bloat. That cute fit might feel like a full-body grip at cruising altitude.”

She ended her explanation by saying: “Stay comfy, practical, and a little bit prepared — and your future in-flight self will thank you”.
