It can be fun rustling up a tasty meal for your family and friends.

But sometimes the kitchen could get a little stressful and unattended pots might begin overspilling from the water you are boiling. This often happens if you’re boiling potatoes, or even pasta, as the starch could cause the kitchen mishap.

Now did you know there’s a handy hack to avoid this from happening – especially if you’re caught up with other culinary tasks? That’s right, all you need is one common freezer item and the problem is solved.

The handy life hack was recently posted on Instagram by user @thegoochpage, who boasts 815,000 followers. So what is the item you need to solve all your overflowing pot worries? It’s ice… Yes it’s that simple.

In the video, the poster wrote: “To keep a pot of boiling water from overflowing, simply drop an ice cube.” And within seconds, you see the magic happen right in front of your eyes. The caption read: “Easy kitchen hack you should know.”

Since it was shared, it’s safe to say many people were amazed it was really that easy. One wrote: “Genius why did I not think of that?” While another added: “Also works to keep grease from popping.” A third commented: “Good to know.”

Others, however, were quite skeptical an ice cube would work for the issue. People on Instagram also suggested propping a wooden spoon on top of the pan to help it stop from overflowing, while others joked putting the heat down was the best option.

Meanwhile someone said: “Or you just put a small amount of oil round the top of the rim.” But sadly, some foodies claimed using an ice cube didn’t actually help, or it did, but only for a short period of time.
