The Premier League season is nearing its end, with just three rounds of fixtures remaining. The title and relegation is already sewn up but teams are still battling for a place in the Champions League.

It was confirmed on Thursday that the division would see six teams in next years competition. The nation has never earned so many spots but only Liverpool have secured their position so far.

There remains FA Cup, Europa League and Champions League finals to come, with one eye on the transfer window with the Club World Cup forcing an early opportunity to sign players. Chelsea and Manchester City’s involvement, sees Premier League clubs permitted to move early in June.

And teams will be gearing up to improve their squads ahead of the next campaign to recover from disappointing seasons or to kick on after showing promise.

Mirror Football takes a look at some of the latest news and transfer rumours.

United’s free transfer hope

Manchester United are a key contender in the race to sign Bayer Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah on a free transfer. Germany international Tah has confirmed that he’ll become a free agent when his contract at Leverkusen expires on July 1.

Reports from Germany claim United are ‘serious competitors’ for the 29-year-old. The Red Devils are said to be on the lookout for a new centre-back.

Tah has also been linked with Barcelona, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, who tried to sign him last summer, and Premier League rivals Newcastle.

Darwin blow

Darwin Nunez and Liverpool have suffered a blow to hopes of an Anfield exit this summer. The Reds are ready to cut ties with the striker, who signed for a club-record £85million fee from Benfica three years ago.

South American giants River Plate were among those being linked to the Uruguayan’s signature.. But the club have now ruled themselves out of buying the 25-year-old this summer.

River’s general secretary Stefano Di Carlo told TyC Sports: “All those names are false. River made a strong transfer market in January. Of course, they will surgically seek out and strengthen certain positions; but that will happen when the transfer market opens. Everything that was said is not real.”

Arteta transfer demand

Mikel Arteta has admitted Arsenal must reinforce their forward line to challenge at the very top. The Gunners failed to add to their ranks in January despite admitting their need and the Spaniard has said in no uncertain terms it is an area they can improve.

“I have to make it more clear. In January it was clear or not? I told you, because you were in the room I think many times, I made a very clear statement, and the statement continues the same,” he said.

“I want the best team, the best players. If we have three goalscorers over 25, bring them in, we’re going to be a much better team, yes.”

“We’ll try to improve, but certainly improve the ones that we have right now, and love the ones that we have right now,” he added. “It’s too easy to look elsewhere and don’t use the moment to judge players, especially.”
