Forgotten corner trick could double your kitchen storage overnight

By staff15 August 2025No Comments4 Mins Read

For those who may be a little tight on space when it comes to their kitchens, there are certain tricks according to one kitchen expert that can help you maximise what you have

There has been an increased search in ‘kitchen storage options’ over the past year – but people are forgetting one simple trick that can help maximise storage overnight.

The rise in searches shows that homeowners are looking to enhance functionality and organisation within their existing spaces, so kitchen expert Darren Watts at Wren Kitchens, has shared his professional insight on the easiest and most effective ways to turn underused areas of your kitchen into valuable storage.

So in order to make the most of what you have, rather than forking out for a brand new kitchen, Darren has shared some of his top tips for getting full use out of your kitchen size.

Maximise every inch with smart corner storage

Corner spaces are one of the most underutilised areas in a kitchen, but with the right solution, they can become some of the most efficient. According to Darren, integrating carousel units or Le Mans pull-out trays transforms hard to reach corners into highly practical storage.

“Corners are often overlooked during the planning stage, but with clever mechanisms, you can access items easily and make full use of the space. These units are especially useful for storing pots, pans, and small appliances, and they can be installed from day one or added later.”

Integrate pull-out larders for pantry-level storage

For households without a walk-in pantry, an integrated pull-out larder can provide the same level of convenience and organisation. Darren points out that a larder unit centralises dry goods, snacks, and everyday ingredients in one easy-to-access space.

“Larders are increasingly popular because they combine accessibility with capacity,” he says. “If space is limited, integrated or corner larders are excellent alternatives to traditional pantry rooms and can be tailored to fit a variety of layouts.”

Tidy up with integrated bins and recycling systems

Keeping waste and recycling neatly tucked away is another crucial element of a well-organised kitchen. Pull-out bins are designed to fit within base units, helping to maintain a clean and streamlined appearance.

“An integrated bin system not only improves the look of a kitchen, but it also makes it easier to manage waste efficiently,” says Darren. “Many designs also include food storage compartments within tower units, helping homeowners keep their kitchen clean and functional every day.”

Add personality with open shelving and wine racks

Open shelving offers a stylish and versatile way to display everyday items, cookware, or decorative pieces. Darren explains that this option is ideal for breaking up rows of cabinets and adding visual interest. “Open shelving gives people the flexibility to change their display over time, depending on what they’re using or how they want the space to feel,” he says.

Wine racks, meanwhile, can be integrated seamlessly into almost any part of the kitchen. “We can incorporate wine storage above a freestanding fridge-freezer, at the end of a run of units, or even within wall units. It adds a touch of character while remaining practical.”

Organise drawers with internal dividers and trays

Internal organisation is just as important as the external layout. Hidden cutlery trays, drawer dividers, and other custom storage inserts keep drawers neat and accessible. “Drawer space can be wasted if it’s not designed correctly,” Darren notes. “By adding dividers, you’re not just tidying up, you’re improving how the kitchen functions every single day.”

Use lazy Susan’s to make wall units work harder

While many customers focus on base unit storage, wall units can also be enhanced with features like a lazy Susan. Darren recommends this option for spices, sauces, and small containers that often get lost at the back of shelves. “A rotating tray helps you see everything at once without pulling out half the shelf. It’s a simple solution, but it’s incredibly effective, especially in smaller kitchens where space is tight.”

When asked about common storage mistakes, Darren points out that it’s less about doing things wrong and more about missing opportunities. “Corner storage, for example, isn’t always top of mind for customers, but it absolutely should be,” he says. “It offers so much hidden potential that can change your overall kitchen look.”

Wren Kitchens offers a full range of integrated storage options that can be built into new designs or added into existing kitchens. To explore these solutions or book a free design consultation, visit wrenkitchens.com.
