“Our FA Trophy game at Basingstoke Town yesterday was abandoned following a serious injury to Magpies player/coach @wesfogden12 in the first half,” the non-league club said. “Wes was conscious and talking as he was taken in to the ambulance, and scans in hospital yesterday evening have confirmed two fractured vertebrae in his neck, which will require a number of weeks in a neck collar

“We will provide further updates on Wes’ condition when we are able to We would like to place on record our thanks to all Magpies and Basingstoke staff and players who helped look after Wes yesterday on the pitch before he was taken to hospital. From everyone at the club, we send our love and very best wishes to Wes for a full and speedy recovery.”

A number of football clubs and fans have shared messages of support for Fogden. “So sorry to hear this. Wishing you a very speedy and full recovery Wes,” wrote one, with another saying “Good luck Wes, the football family is with you”.

Last year’s FA Trophy was won by Aldershot Town, who beat Spennymoor Town 3-0 in the final at Wembley. The Shots are due to enter the competition at the third round stage along with the other 23 teams in the National League Premier.
