Fortnite is a free-to-play live service game that was launched by Epic Games in July 2017 and has gone on to become a cultural phenomenon.
It has an estimated one million daily players, many have registered their frustration as today’s service outage.
The game’s incredible popularity has led to established franchises pivoting to adopt the same format of a free-to-play battle royale shooter.
Playable on PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, Fortnite was pulled from Google Play and the App Store in in 2020 when Epic Games added direct payment options to circumvent Apple and Google’s 30 per cent cut from in-app sales.
