Customers of high street banks are set to see dozens of branches disappear in the coming weeks with closures announced by five major banks.

Financial giants including Lloyds, Halifax and NatWest will be getting rid of in-person services across many high streets in the coming days, with 11 closures set to take place this week.

NatWest customers will see branches closing their doors for the final time in Abingdon, Birmingham, New Market, Willerby, and Yate this week.

Meanwhile lender Halifax is also closing local branches in London Clapham Junction, Rhyl, Erdington, Cirencester, and Walkden this week and the Lloyds branch in Leeds Armley is also getting the chop.

Banks have stated that as more customers use online and mobile banking apps to manage their accounts the business case for in-person branches become harder to make, however many customers and small businesses still rely on their local branch for everyday banking.

More than 6,400 bank and building society branches have closed since 2015, with doors shutting at a rate of 53 branches per month, Which? has reported, in what deputy editor Sam Richardson described as a “seismic shift” in how UK banks work.

If your bank is closing there are still some things you can do, for example Post Office branches allow you to perform basic banking tasks and with 11,684 branches nationwide they still have a presence in most towns and cities. Some areas also benefit from a mobile banking service which brings a bus fitted out with all the services of a bank branch to places that no longer have a bricks-and-mortar option.

You can find your nearest Post Office branch by visiting postoffice.co.uk/branch-finder and contact your bank for more information on mobile banking services.
