Furious Ruben Amorim points finger at Man Utd players after Carabao Cup humiliation

By staff28 August 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

Manchester United crashed out of the Carabao Cup in an embarrasing penalty shootout defeat to League Two side Grimsby Town and Ruben Amorim made his feelings very clear

Ruben Amorim tore into his Manchester United flops in the aftermath of Wednesday night’s humiliation at the hands of Grimsby Town. The Red Devils crashed out of the Carabao Cup against the League Two side.

They were eventually ousted on penalties after a dismal 2-2 draw. And Amorim made his fury very well known after the full-time whistle, claiming that the performances – or lack thereof – of some of his stars spoke volumes.

Speaking to Sky Sports, the Portuguese coach said: ”In the end it doesnt matter if we recover or not. I know the best team won, the only team that was on the pitch. The best players lose because any players can win against any group of players.

“I think the players spoke really loud today. The best team won. I think it’s really clear what they spoke. Let’s move on from this day. I think it was really clear what happened today.

Asked what went wrong for his side, he added: “I don’t know. Not just the space but the way we start the game without any intensity, any idea of pressure. We were completely lost. They spoke really loud.

Man Utd suffer humiliating Carabao Cup exit to League Two Grimsby as Ruben Amorim hits new low

“I think that [the same issues] is a problem. When you lose and see something new, it is different. We have to say sorry to the fans. The support that they gave us with all of the defeats, I just have to say I’m really sorry.

“I think they [the players] gave the response on the pitch today so I don’t have to talk about that. We have a game at the weekend and then we have two weeks and we will sort things out.”

Andre Onana endured another woeful evening in Grimsby, but Amorim has refused to lay blame just at the Cameroonian’s door. In answering the question, Amorim continued to grow more exasperated and added: “When you play with respect, a fourth division team, it’s everything. Not just the goalkeeper. It’s every detail. My players spoke for me really loud.”

The Red Devils will be aiming to finally secure their first win of the season this weekend as they welcome newly-promoted Burnley to Old Trafford.

Elsewhere, Grimsby have been handed a draw against Championship side Sheffield Wednesday as their reward for finding a route past the Red Devils.
