A woman has gone viral on social media after sharing her ‘game-changing’ hack for keeping supermarket herbs fresh for longer at home – and it is absolutely cost-free

Cooking enthusiasts know there’s a unique charm to using fresh herbs – they add an extra zing to meals, and a touch of visual flair that brings a fine dining style to your home.

But, keeping them from spoiling is quite the conundrum, especially when space or time constraints make growing your own a garden a handful. Regrettably, shop-bought herbs are notorious for going bad quickly.

Thankfully, there’s a useful trick that can keep them fresh for weeks. TikTok user @hey.itsbel, who’s amassed more than 24million likes thanks to her culinary quick fixes, shared this trick in a recent video – and it’s cost-free.

Bel demonstrated it with a batch of parsley, meticulously detaching leaves from stems and guiding them through a water rinse in a sieve. Bell said: “Taking the stems off is fully optional but I like to go through and do it because it gives you a chance to see if there is anything bad in the bunch – it will make the rest of it bad much quicker so you want to get rid of any of that.”

Next, she reached for a sandwich bag and laid down four paper towels on her kitchen worktop. After allowing excess water from her washed herbs to be absorbed by the paper, she carefully placed the herbs on top. She then gently dabbed the parsley with another sheet of kitchen roll, explaining, “Just to get the extra moisture out of there.”

She said: “We want the paper towel to be wet but we don’t want extra moisture trapped inside. So now the leaves are relatively dry, our paper towel is just a little bit damp with some cold water, just wrap it up to hold it all together.”

She then nestled the neatly wrapped herbs into a sandwich bag before stowing them away in the fridge. Bel swears her “game-changer” technique will prolong the life of herbs by up to three weeks.
