Gardeners told to carry out important task on 3 plants to ‘guarantee summer-long blooms’

By staff16 June 2025No Comments2 Mins Read

Pruning plants in June can seem like a daunting task, but it’s crucial to ensure your garden thrives throughout the summer months. Here are three plants you should prune now

Pruning is essential for many plants at this time of year, especially spring-blooming shrubs, certain perennials and some herbs.

Proper pruning not only shapes and manages the size of your plants but also promotes flowering, new growth and their overall health.

However, if plants are pruned during the growing season they can become stressed and divert their energy away from growth.

Many gardeners find pruning a bit daunting, fearing one wrong cut could spell disaster for their cherished plants.

To help avoid any horticultural mishaps, Ben McInerney, of Go Tree Quotes, has shared his top tips on three plants that need a trim in June and the best way to go about it, reports the Express.

1. Roses

For roses, it’s all about encouraging those beautiful blooms and keeping the bush looking good. You can deadhead any damaged or dead flowers any time in summer, says Ben.

When it comes to pruning roses this month, start by removing any dead or damaged bits. Then, take about a third off the length of each stem. It may sound drastic but it’s not, the expert says

Stick to a regular deadheading routine and your rose should grow throughout the summer, autumn and up to the first winter frosts.

2. Shrubs

Ben advises a simple approach for shrubs: “All you have to do is cut off any dead or damaged branches, as well as any overgrown or crossing branches.”

Take out roughly a quarter of the older branches, then shape and remove smaller stems to open up the interior of the shrub and give it form.

3. Perennials

Summer perennials that flower heavily don’t need extensive pruning for shaping or size management. However, they do benefit from some maintenance in the early summer.

Your autumn-flowering perennials can also gain from early summer maintenance. Cutting them back now can keep their stem heights manageable, lessen the chance of droopy flowers, and eliminate the need for staking.
