Gardeners told to plant 3 flowers that fight weeds but with caution

By staff9 May 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

Gardeners are being advised to plant natural weed-fighting flowers, but to proceed with care, as not all options suit every garden or local ecosystem

As weeds begin their annual invasion of flowerbeds and borders, gardeners are being encouraged to turn to nature for help. Surprisingly, certain plants can act as living weed suppressants if chosen wisely.

Flowers and ground covers like bugleweed, creeping thyme, and pachysandra are known to form thick mats that will crowd out unwanted growth, like weeds. These flowers and plants work by covering the soil quickly and effectively, ultimately limiting light and space for weeds to thrive.

Not only that, even some taller plants like juniper and specific varieties of marigolds can also play a huge part. Their height and spread can shade out weed seedlings before they even start to grow and flourish.

These green allies offer an eco-friendly solution that avoids relying on harsh chemical herbicides. Plus, they bring added beauty and often attract pollinators like bees and butterflies which is essential for Spring.

However, gardeners are being urged to proceed with a bit of caution because not every so-called ‘weed fighter’ is suitable for every garden. Bugleweed, for example, is known for spreading rapidly and may overrun neighbouring plants if not carefully maintained.

Creeping thyme, on the other hand, is a gentler ground cover that doubles as a fragrant addition to paths and borders. Its low-growing habit and delicate flowers make it a popular and manageable choice.

Pachysandra, often seen in shady woodland-style gardens, forms dense mats of glossy green leaves. But it prefers moist, rich soil, so might struggle in drier or sunnier areas.

If you’re considering taller species like juniper, make sure they won’t dominate or shade out valued perennials. And when it comes to marigolds, only certain types, like French marigolds, have known weed-repelling traits.

The secret lies in balance and planning. Mixing these weed-fighting plants among others can provide natural protection without disrupting garden harmony.

Experts recommend planting these species early in the season so they establish themselves before the weeds arrive in force. Mulching around them can further boost their effectiveness.

It’s also worth monitoring their growth through the summer, trimming as needed to keep them in check. Like any gardening method, natural weed control requires a bit of patience and regular care.

In the end, flowers that fight weeds can be a gardener’s best friend, when chosen thoughtfully. It’s all about finding the right plant for the right place and maintaining them appropriately to stop them getting out of control.
