Gardeners urged to make drastic change to houseplants in June ‘add one thing’

By staff6 June 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

Experts at Gardeners’ World are urging people to do this one task to ensure their houseplants survive the summer temperatures and remain as vibrant into autumn

Experts are urging gardeners to take extra care of houseplants in rising temperatures by adding one crucial item to the soil.

Gardeners’ World, in its list of jobs to complete in June, said households should be adding liquid fertiliser to indoor plants around now as they are “completely reliant on you”. This is because potted plants kept inside have less access to the likes of minerals. So to ensure your house plants thrive, action must be taken.

Popular house plants such as spider plants, photos and peace lilies are among those that need the little extra care and attention.

The site recommended gardeners feed houseplants once a week using liquid fertiliser. It explained: “The roots of garden plants can spread through the soil to find nutrients, but pot-grown houseplants are completely reliant upon you for the minerals they need.”

Nonetheless, it still has to be done in moderation to avoid insects entering your home. The website added: “It’s also wise to avoid feeding them too many bugs as even in the cleanest of homes, they’ll generally catch what they need without help.”

How to make liquid fertiliser for plants

Fertilisers are key for plants because they provide all the necessary nutrients to survive. These nutrients include nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, which benefit them for healthy growth and flowering.

If plants don’t receive the necessary nutrients, this can badly affect their overall health and flowering, which can potentially lead to death. Therefore, it’s very important to regularly water plants by also rotating them to get the most out of the rays of sunshine.

Instead of spending money on unnecessary products, there are various ways to make your own natural and organic liquid fertiliser. To do so, you can simply mix water with organic materials, such as grass clippings and egg shells.

Opting for organic fertilisers is much better, since plants absorb them much faster, and they improve soil health. Not only is it a cheaper alternative, but it delivers quicker and better results, especially in their growth.

By following this simple advice, gardeners can ensure that their indoor plants remain vibrant and healthy all year round, especially during the summer. When it comes to gardening, it’s a fun activity that not only adds a touch of greenery to any indoor space, but it’s also a reward to see your plants grow.
