When it comes to choosing the plants for your garden this summer, one thing you’re sure to want is a sense of vibrancy and colour, and thanks to these gardening enthusiasts’ recommendations, you’ll get just that.

Not only do you want a splash of colour in your soil this season, but you want your flowers to have a long-spanning life. While some plants stand out, they may quickly dull down and die after just a few weeks, but this small section is here to stay.

Adam’s Gardening Guide has shared his ultimate list of long-lasting colourful plants. Not to mention, many of his recommendations are hardy and so grow back year after year, meaning not only will they last all summer long, but also for many summers to come.

Perennial Sweet Pea (Lathyrus)

These sweet peas tend to produce many yards of growth throughout the year, layering themselves and offering dozens of flowerheads. It blooms beautiful pink flowers, and thanks to the stems growing longer throughout the season, more flowers will appear.

The gardener suggests: “If you got an opportunity around your garden to plant something like the perennial sweet pea, perhaps with some evergreen shrubs or some hedging, consider doing this. They’re very easy to grow from seed, sown in the spring and grown on; they take a little while to establish, and I found it in the second year it really has romped away, to put on the most magnificent flowering performance.”

Dahlia

Dahlias are suggested as a great plant to display splays in pots and containers or even to cut up and bring inside your home, adding a touch of colour to any space. While there are a huge variety of Dahlias you can grow, they’re best kept in individual planters.

This gardener explains that during the winter months he chooses to bring the dahlias inside his greenhouse during the winter months and bring them back out in the spring. These plants can flower as early as July and will continue to show vibrancy and bloom up until the frosty seasons.

Buddleja

These flowers can produce a range of vibrant colours, predominantly an electric blue, first growing into spikes before blooming fully. Bringing a bright display to your garden.

The key thing to keeping up such a colourful display, the gardener suggests, is to deadhead off of the old flowers and encourage the new lower stems to grow out. They will then grow from the height of summer, right through until autumn.

Astrantia

Another plant with plenty of potential to bloom year on year is Astrantia, perfect for adding to the borders of your gardens. An Astrantia ‘Roma’ is often referred to as Hattie’s pincushion, as the tiny flowers look as if they’re covered in clumps of pins.

They tend to form nice bold clumps and are available in a wide range of colours. The flowers are known to grow in blood red colours to bright whites and even ones with multi-coloured leaves.

Other plants suggested for a touch of colour in your garden include Pineapple Lily, Geranium ‘Rozanne’ and English Shrub Rose’s. The gardening enthusiast also recommends planting Hydrangea, Begonia and Fuchsia for long-lasting colours.
