An everyday summer treat can be used to fulfil gardening tasks, offering a simpler and eco-friendly way – and it doesn’t require any extra effort or unnecessary money.

Gardeners are now being told to hold off on the ice cream cones this summer as they can actually be a great helper when it comes to planting seeds. It doesn’t take a lot of effort, but just some dedicated minutes – and the results are worth the wait.

Now with the warmer temperatures giving us an early taste of the summer season, it’s the best time to get ahead of the gardening tasks and start to make our outdoor spaces as tidy and organised as possible.

Ever wondered for ways to plant your seedlings without spending unnecessary money? Well, if you’ve got some ice cream cones in your cupboard or in your freezer, you might want to read carefully.

It’s a good gardening tool with lots of nutrients, and it’s even a good activity for the little ones who want to help out. It will teach them about where food comes from, as well give them a sense of accomplishment once the plants start growing.

As reported by Yahoo! News, the site wrote: “Ice cream cones make for a cute and eco-friendly seedling starter container. It’s a fun way to get children involved, and they can be popped directly into the soil, as the cones act as a warm shield and then biodegrade over time.”

To do so, they said to cut the bottom half off the cone before planting, as advised by Flour & Fancies. Using ice cream cones works particularly well on smaller plants, as they are biodegradable and can be planted once the seedlings are ready.

As the cone will break and melt over time, it will enrich the soil by providing nutrients to the seedlings. It’s also a fun and educational idea for younger children to participate in without creating a lot of mess. Plus, they get it see it grow!

Using ice cream cones for planting

  1. Fill the ice cream cone with potting soil.
  2. Put the seeds of your choice into the soil, making sure that they’re well covered.
  3. Water the soil, and put the ice cream cone in a place where it can get direct sunlight.
  4. Once the seedlings are ready, dig a hole and plant the ice cream cone with the seedlings into the ground.
  5. The ice cream cone will then melt and break down over time, enriching the soil and providing the necessary nutrients to grow a beautiful plant.

By following these simple steps, gardeners will be able to grow some beautiful plants. The best thing about it is that it will save you a lot of time, effort, and some pennies.
