Hydrangeas are known for their beautiful bright colours, gardens get that boost of greenery during the spring and summer months, when the sun is out and the temperatures are warmer. Gardeners and those who’d like to revamp their outdoor spaces can do this now, for free.

These seasonal blooms aren’t just eye-catching, but they’re also a good attractor to bees and butterflies. Hydrangeas are a great option if gardeners are also looking forward to supporting biodiversity and attracting other beneficial pollinators that help maintain a healthy and green garden. Plus, who doesn’t like the company of a butterfly roaming around your fully-bloomed plants?

TikTok user and gardener Simon Akeroyd shared his method on how to take hydrangea cuttings. In a one-minute video that has garnered over 1.2 million views and 24.6k likes, Simon shared a step-by-step video on how to make the most of the pants for next year.

If you’re a fan of these stunning flowers and want to replicate the plants that you already have in your garden, by following this tip, gardeners will transform their garden spaces into a new place filled with so much colour and greenery.

“You need to find a friend or neighbour growing hydrangeas and ask them if they will kindly allow you to take some cuttings. Keep cuttings well watered and out of direct sunlight,” he captioned on the video.

Simon began by finding a non-flowering shoot, cutting below a pair of leaves. Then, he proceeds to remove all the lower leaves and cut the remaining in half to reduce water loss. Later on, he inserts the cutting into a peat-free compost.

“They will soon grow into magnificent specimens,” he confirmed whilst showing some of the plants that had grown over the past year.

By taking the hydrangea cuttings, it can help the plant to be replicated by growing into a new plant. Hydrangeas are known for their ability to root quickly and create more plants from an existing one.

According to Gardeners’ World, the best time to do this is during the late-summer, when the cutties are semi-ripped. The site explained that this is when hydrangeas are in the season’s growth but are still soft at the tip.

By following these simple instructions, gardeners will turn their gardens into beautiful and vibrant spaces. Although it might take a year to fully develop, there’s no better feeling than seeing the progress being made.
