Gardening expert’s hack to boost your plants for free using bananas

By staff15 April 2025No Comments2 Mins Read

Gardening expert shares how to boost your plants for free using a banana peel. Everything from roses to hydrangeas, strawberries to potatoes can be boosted with its help

Gardening is a soothing pastime for many, known to reduce stress levels and burn calories. However, like all hobbies, it can be costly, with specialist tools, high-end soil enhancers and fertilisers on garden centre shelves luring gardeners to spend their cash.

But there’s a simple and inexpensive method to enhance all the plants in your garden – without the need for pricey, specialist feed. Just use bananas. The modest yellow fruit, besides being a vitamin-rich source of potassium for us, is also an excellent way to boost your garden. Everything from roses to hydrangeas, strawberries to potatoes can benefit from banana peel this spring and summer.

Banana peel can be added to any compost heap or compost pile in your garden to create nutrient-rich soil to spread around your garden at no cost, reports the Express.

As explained by Gardening KnowHow: “Many people are excited to find out that they can use banana peels as fertiliser.

“Using banana peels in compost is a great way to add both organic material and some very important nutrients to your compost mix.

“Putting banana peel in your compost pile will help add calcium, magnesium, sulphur, phosphates, potassium and sodium, all of which are important to the healthy growth of both flowering and fruiting plants.

“Bananas in compost also help add healthy organic material, which help the compost retain water and make soil lighter when added to your garden.

“Beyond this, banana peels will break down quickly in compost, which allows them to add these important nutrients to the compost much more quickly than some other compost materials.”

The website also provides an economical solution by offering lower-priced composting equipment, delivered directly from local councils, collaborating with various authorities nationwide.
