Gareth Southgate lands new role after ‘laying out two Man Utd demands’

By staff11 October 2025No Comments4 Mins Read

Gareth Southgate has been out of a managerial role since stepping down as England manager last summer, but has been linked with Manchester United in the event Ruben Amorim is sacked

Gareth Southgate spoke at the 11th Aspire Academy Global Summit in the US this week. The 55-year-old has been out of a managerial job since stepping down from England after Euro 2024 last summer.

However, he has evidently kept busy in the year since. The Aspire Academy Global Summit brings people from all walks of professional football together to share their wisdom on the game.

This year’s event was hosted in Philadelphia, as Southgate was joined by the likes of Rafael Benitez – who presented a master class – as well as Carli Lloyd, Wilfried Nancy and Alessandro Nesta, among others. Speaking at the summit, Southgate said: “The most important thing for developing football is developing coaches.

“We are all constantly learning. Bringing people together to share experiences and ideas helps us all grow, especially as the game continues to evolve.”

It comes as Southgate has been linked with taking up tenure at Manchester United in the event that Ruben Amorim is sacked. The Portuguese head coach has struggled to make much of an impact since taking over from Erik ten Hag last November.

They could only muster a miserable 15th-place finish in the Premier League last season, while this term has seen a mixed-bag of ups and downs. At the time of writing, United sit tenth in the league table with three wins, three losses and a draw to their name.

They were also knocked out of the Carabao Cup in August after a penalty shootout with League Two side, Grimsby Town. While many fans have started to grow tired with Amorim’s style of management and lack of results, he may have bought himself a little more time with a 2-0 win over Sunderland AFC ahead of the international break – with Mason Mount and Benjamin Sesko clinching all three points for the Red Devils.

As a result of his tough tenure with the club, a number of potential candidates have been linked with replacing Amorim as of recent, from Brighton’s Fabian Hurzeler and Crystal Palace’s Oliver Glasner, to La Liga legends like Zinedine Zidane and Xavi Hernandez.

And while Southgate has also been linked with taking up the top job at Old Trafford, the former Middlesbrough was recently suggested to hold a number of demands that the board may not be able to meet. As per the Sun, sources suggest that United executives would have to stick to any long-term plans.

It is also claimed that Southgate harbours concerns that the board would need instant success from him, despite him taking a gradual approach over a prolonged period. Southgate hasn’t managed in the English top flight since Middlesbrough were relegated in 2009.

Instead, he has dedicated the last decade or so of his life to international football, taking the reins of England’s U21 side in 2013, before gaining promotion to the first-team three years later.

While he failed to win a major title with the Three Lions, Southgate successfully guided England to runner-up places at Euro 2020 and Euro 2024, as well as a third-place finish in the 2018/19 UEFA Nations League.
