Take That star Gary Barlow has revealed he once received an expensive bottle of Pauillac wine – of which some brands can fetch tens of thousands – from King Charles
Gary Barlow has boasted about the finest bottle of wine he has ever received – which was a gift from none other than King Charles III.
The 53-year-old Take That star has a long history with the Royal Family – and was a key organiser of the late Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee concert in June 2012. The iconic celebration saw a huge number of top talent singers perform for the entertainment of the country – with Sir Tom Jones, Sir Elton John, Stevie Wonder and Sir Paul McCartney among those taking to the stage.
The line-up thrilled the royals as much as the millions who tuned in from around the world – and the now King gave Gary a gift following the concert. Now Gary has opened up about the historic moment and shared all about the present he received.
Speaking to pop sensation Jessie Ware on her Table Manners podcast, the Forever Love singer said: “Most of my cellar is actually wine that people have bought for me. It’s got to the point where I write on the side who it’s from. I think the most expensive bottle of wine I own is a Pauillac. And I do believe, I’m gonna name drop, I’m afraid. The King gave it to me. Around the Diamond Jubilee.”
Gary continued: “I organised the concert for that. So he, yeah, I got it sort of a couple of days later with a little telegram and yeah I haven’t touched that. It’s actually not even in the cellar that it’s upstairs in the house.”
Gary went on to reflect on his early dating days with his wife Dawn Andrews – who he has been married to since the year 2000 and shares son Daniel, 24, and daughters Emily, 22 and Daisy, 15, with her. He recalled: “We were in Manchester, and we’d been to a club, and we’re all piled in this van on the way home. We were in the very back of this van, and we were sitting right next to each other, had my arm around her and I just thought, this is it kids, I’m going in.”
He also explained that he and Dawn had worked together before their relationship turned romantic. Asked how they met, he explained: “Oh, she was a dancer. I met her first in 1988 when I’d been brought in to do this really terrible video by Virgin at the time, which had off shoots around the country, and there’s two dancers on that. She was one of them. And so we met then just for the day, never thought anything more of it.”
He added: “Then bumped into her over the years, at Top of the Pops and the Royal Variety performances and things, and then we did a tour in like 95 where we had like 20 dancers.”
