Tottenham failed to reach the Carabao Cup final after being thumped by Liverpool at Anfield and that defeat has left a host of people including Gary Neville looking very silly
Tottenham proved Gary Neville wrong with their thumping at Liverpool, and they might end up proving their own manager wrong too.
Ange Postecoglou’s side saw their run in the Carabao Cup end on Thursday evening. Despite winning the first leg of the semi-final 1-0 at home, Spurs then slumped to a 4-0 defeat at Anfield – Cody Gakpo, Mohamed Salah, Dominik Szoboszlai and Virgil van Dijk scoring the goals.
The defeat came just hours after Neville had boldly tipped Postecoglou’s side to reach the final. Speaking ahead of kick-off, he said: “I think Tottenham [will go through].
“I think Tottenham are going to get a draw. I don’t know how they’re going to get a draw at Anfield, but I feel like it’s going to be an emotional, mad night where something happens.
“Postecoglou said earlier on in the season… I’m maybe not hanging my hat on what he’s saying entirely, but I’ve just got a feeling Tottenham…I’ve got a feeling Tottenham could win the Carabao Cup this season.
“And I’ve got a feeling that, to be fair, they’re always going to have to come through a moment like this. It will be absolute Liverpool favourites, but I feel somehow Tottenham are going to get a draw by hook or by crook.”
And while Neville’s prediction was drastically wrong, Tottenham’s heavy defeat also threatens to leave boss Postecoglou looking silly. The Australian claimed earlier this season that he “always” wins something in his second season at a club.
He said: “I’ll correct myself – I don’t usually win things, I always win things in my second year. Nothing’s changed. I’ve said it now. I don’t say things unless I believe them.”

As it stands, that claim looks highly unlikely to come to fruition. With the Carabao Cup – and of course Premier League – already off the table – that just leaves a few opportunities for Spurs to claim silverware this term.
The North London side face a tough FA Cup draw this weekend as they take on Aston Villa. Spurs’ Europa League campaign has been a success having sealed an automatic spot in the knockout rounds but there’s still some way to go before they can think about lifting that trophy.
Following this weekend’s clash with Aston Villa, Spurs are back in action next weekend as they take on fellow struggling side Manchester United in North London.
