Gary Neville predicts another Man Utd star wants to ‘get out’ after transfer approach

Manchester United’s attempts to bring in a new goalkeeper could prompt Andre Onana to look for a route out of Old Trafford having also been named as a substitute against Fulham

Gary Neville has questioned Manchester United’s goalkeeping situation, suggesting that Andre Onana’s confidence could be shaken to the extent that he might ask to be sold before next week’s transfer deadline.

United chiefs are close to completing a £17m move for Royal Antwerp’s Senne Lammens, with Onana again a substitute for Sunday’s game against Fulham as Altay Bayindir remains between the posts despite an unconvincing display in the opening weekend defeat to Arsenal.

Earlier in the window the Old Trafford club were linked with Aston Villa’s Emi Martinez and PSG’s Gianluigi Donnarumma, who now looks set to join Manchester City – but neither amounted to much more than speculation.

Commenting ahead of United’s clash with the Cottagers, Neville revealed he had spoken to people inside the club who admitted a new goalkeeper remains a priority and is now left wondering if Onana might be exploring a move away.

“I’ve been asking around about that one this morning and spoke to a few people at United,” Neville said. “The feeling is the new boy coming in would probably be a No2 who would start on the bench, but they absolutely do need a No1.

“The main priority for United is still goals and we think (Matheus) Cunha, (Bryan) Mbeumo and (Benjamin) Sesko are going to do that. We think Onana will start today but that situation isn’t right.

“Bayindir came in last week but he makes a lot of mistakes. Now that Onana knows United have been scouting around Europe for a new goalkeeper and replacement for him, his confidence must be shot at and he must be thinking he wants to get out.”

The former United full back also warned that the club need to act swiftly before the transfer deadline on September 1.

“They have to deal with that. That and the central midfielder slot next to Bruno [Fernandes] are the two things they need to get sorted this week.”

Despite his concerns, Neville still believes Onana is the best option available to Ruben Amorim right now.

Asked who he would pick against Fulham, before it was confirmed that Bayindir would remain, Neville said: “I would go with Onana, he’s the most reliable out of the unreliable goalkeepers they have.

“I think Bayindir is young, Onana for me is the better goalkeeper, although he makes mistakes as well and he’s not ideal. But I think he’s got a bigger personality and character than Bayindir and he’s got that experience, so I think Onana should start.”
