Gary Neville claimed Liverpool produced the best half of football this season as they dominated Tottenham en route to their 6-3 success which saw them increase their lead at the top of the Premier League
Gary Neville was adamant that Liverpool produced the best period of football throughout the Premier League season as they hammered Tottenham.
The Reds have sat top throughout the campaign and opened up a five-point lead at the summit after Chelsea, their nearest challengers, dropped points at Everton. Arne Slot has quickly implemented his style and the Merseysiders are hot favourites to win the top flight.
They’ve been the league’s standout outfit but saved perhaps their best displays for their trip to Tottenham. Liverpool scored three in either half and were particularly dominant in the first period as they limited the host’s opportunities and continued to put them under pressure.
Neville, watching on from commentary, was hugely impressed and said: “If the rest are watching this is as good a 35 minutes of football as I’ve seen this season.”
The former Manchester United player turned pundit claimed at the start of the season that Liverpool could miss out on the top four as they dealt with the transition post Jurgen Klopp. He anticipated a drop off but has owned up to his prediction blunder.
He said at full-time: “One of the most impressive starts from a manager in the Premier League. Taking over from Jurgen Klopp, many including myself thought there would be a natural decline and a bit of pain. But it is the absolute opposite, total authority in this match.”
Liverpool will sit top at Christmas for the seventh time in the Premier League era. However their only success since the 1992 rebrand was in 2019-20 when they raced to the title, albeit few will back against them this term.
Slot said: “The first 50-55 minutes is what you want, apart from the goal we conceded. 3-1 up and then it ended up being 5-1. We thought it was enough but Tottenham have far too much quality and they’re able to create and score.”
The Dutchman added on their position: “Still three games to go until halfway but if you go here and play the game we did then it shows we are a hard team to beat. If it was easy to win the league then every team would do it.”
