Gary Neville’s five word Liverpool comment speaks volumes after late Arsenal winner

By staff29 September 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

Liverpool suffered their first defeat of the season on Saturday as they were beaten 2-1 by Crystal Palace, before Arsenal’s late win over Newcastle on Sunday afternoon

Gary Neville delivered a five-word assessment of Liverpool after watching Arsenal score a dramatic late winner in the Premier League title race. Liverpool lost their first game of the season on Saturday with a 2-1 defeat to Crystal Palace.

The Reds’ early-season form saw them establish a five-point advantage at the Premier League summit going into Sunday’s fixtures, but that margin has now been reduced following Arsenal’s victory. The Gunners secured a 2-1 win over Newcastle United in dramatic circumstances at St James’ Park to narrow the deficit between themselves and Liverpool to just two points.

Arsenal were behind 1-0 heading into the 84th minute before goals from Mikel Merino and Gabriel Magalhaes enabled Mikel Arteta’s men to claim maximum points on Tyneside. It was shortly after Gabriel had netted Arsenal’s winner that Neville offered his assessment of Liverpool.

Whilst providing commentary for Sky Sports, Neville remarked: “Liverpool players’ hearts sinking slightly.” The Reds finished ten points ahead of Mikel Arteta’s outfit last term and will be hoping for a comparable points gap by the time the 2025/26 season draws to a close.

Liverpool will now be concentrating on preparing for a European away fixture, where they face Galatasaray in Turkey on Tuesday evening in the Champions League. Following that, the Premier League will be back in action next weekend as the Anfield outfit head to Stamford Bridge to take on Chelsea in their last match before the October international break.

For Arsenal, they will take on Olympiacos in the Champions League in midweek. This is before the Gunners will host West Ham in the London derby in their final match before the two-week hiatus for international football.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said after their late win: “Unbelievable feeling. That’s what football is about. As a team when you get what you deserve right at the end, there’s not a better feeling than that.”

He added: “The belief, the conviction of the team that we are and how we can play various types of games and the team still can deliver and win it in a convincing way…

“For me today at one of the most difficult grounds – again, praise Newcastle, the way they play, compete, how difficult it is to play at this place, but the team really took their game to a different level and I’m very proud to see that.”
