Gene Hackman, one of Hollywood’s most acclaimed actors, chose a reclusive life away from the limelight before his tragic passing.
Gene Hackman, the two-time Oscar-winning actor, was one of the best talents to ever grace the silver screen, known for his powerful performances in iconic films like The French Connection and Unforgiven. Gene passed away on February 27, 2025, at the age of 95.
After a career spanning more than four decades, Gene made the conscious decision to step away from the spotlight, opting for a quieter, more solitary life. Born in 1930, Gene rose to fame in the 1970s, becoming a household name for his roles in films like The Conversation, Superman, and Hoosiers. His performances earned him critical acclaim and two Academy Awards – one for The French Connection and another for Unforgiven. Despite his immense success and recognition, Gene began retreating from the public eye in the early 2000s, following his last acting role in Welcome to Mooseport (2004).
Since then, Gene has lived a reclusive life in Santa Fe, New Mexico, far removed from the flashing cameras and Hollywood parties that once defined his career. His decision to leave film was unexpected, particularly considering his talent and the popularity of his roles. Gene, however, has made it clear that the pressures of fame no longer interested him, and he preferred the peace and privacy that his new life offered.
“I was trained to be an actor, not a star. I was trained to play roles, not to deal with fame and agents and lawyers and the press,” he once said. “It really costs me a lot emotionally to watch myself on-screen. I think of myself, and feel like I’m quite young, and then I look at this old man with the baggy chins and the tired eyes and the receding hairline and all that.”
In recent years, Gene has been seen only occasionally. He was last spotted in public in a rare outing at a 7-Eleven in New Mexico, where he grabbed an apple pie and coffee. This appearance came just days after he was seen with his wife, Betsy Arakawa, in public for the first time in two decades. The couple, married since 1991, rarely make public appearances, adding to Hackman’s desire for privacy.
In 2023, after years out of the public eye, Gene was spotted in great health and high spirits near his Santa Fe home. He appeared to be fit and active, enthusiastically tackling yard work, shovel in hand, as he immersed himself in his outdoor chores.
He was also seen enjoying a bite to eat in his car after taking a trip to a Wendy’s drive-thru, before his busy day saw him take to the petrol station to fill up his vehicle and grab an instant coffee. He sported an active outfit as he dressed in a fleece sweater over a long grey shirt. He paired the look with blue jeans, a pair of black trainer and a khaki-coloured baseball cap. The actor made sure he had his sunglasses ready to protect him from the sun and placed them casually on the top of his hat.
His wispy grey hairs could be seen coming out the back of his cap and tucked behind his ears, while he still sported his usual styled moustache. The last time Gene was seen in front of the camera was in the 2004 comedy Welcome to Mooseport, where he starred alongside Ray Romano and Christine Baranski. After filming, he announced his departure from the industry, marking the end of his acting career.
