One traveller has revealed her ‘genius’ plane hack which allows you to watch films and TV shows hands-free – for those cheap, short-haul flights where time always seems to stand still
Turn your £10 Ryanair flight into a luxury entertainment hub with this genius paper bag hack. Well… kind of.
Despite the bizarre trend of ‘raw dogging’ flights, most of us want our hours in the air to (quite literally) fly by quickly. If you’re jetting off to the Canaries or hotspots like Greece and Cyprus, you’ll be on a short-haul flight for around four hours with no on-board entertainment or free food. It’s arguably worse than flying long haul, where you will at least get a warm meal and your own TV loaded with games and films.
However, TikTok user Sharon has found an imaginative loophole so you can bingewatch Netflix without having to hold your phone the entire time. “Thank us later,” she captioned the now-viral post, that has attracted a whopping 1.1 million views and 66,000 likes.
Flying with her another person, Sharon demonstrated how she uses a sick bag to create a hands-free device. She simply takes her iPhone out of the case, slips a section of the sick bag into the phone case then re-inserts her phone. Then, Sharon hangs her phone up by clipping the sick bag onto the foldable table in front of her. Et voila! You can watch your favourite films and TV shows with your partner or friend.
Hundreds of viewers flocked to the comments section to share their thoughts, with many sharing the hack with their friends and family. “Super handy!” one person raved. Another agreed, commenting: “Why did I only see this after my flight?” A third branded the method ‘genius’ while a fourth penned: “I’m really the kind of person who would do this.

However, it’s clear not everybody approved of the hack. “Wow, the germs and bacteria on your phone now are thriving,” one person subbed. Another dismissed the hack due to privacy concerns, adding: “Nah, I don’t want anyone to watch what I am watching. A third joked: “My motion sickness could never,” while a fourth wrote: “[It’s] too low.”
If using a sick bag to create a hands-free device gives you the ick, you can always purchase a phone holder specifically designed for planes. This Gear Geek version, which has a bunch of five star reviews, clips effortlessly on the top of your table and costs just £8.99. It’s a much sleeker and less controversial way of keeping yourself occupied during the flight!
