Former Sheffield United star George Baldock tragically passed away last month but it could be some time before his family are able to find out exactly what caused his death
George Baldock’s family have been told it could take months to find out what caused his tragic death.
The former Sheffield United star tragically passed away last month. He was found in his swimming pool in Athens, triggering an outpouring of grief and tributes from across the footballing landscape.
Baldock’s family and friends have already bid their farewells during his funeral after his body was repatriated to the UK. But it could still be some time before those close to him find out what for sure led to his heart-breaking death.
It has been revealed that information might not be available until the new year, although it has been suggested that a heart issue could have contributed to Baldock’s passing.
Dr Grigoris Leon, of the Hellenic Society of Forensic Medicine, said: “The release of official findings could take months. There are only five people with the expertise to conduct microscopic tests in Greece. The cause of his death is very likely to have been pathological and related to the heart.”
A statement from Bladock’s family announcing his death read: “We are heartbroken with the sudden passing of our beloved George. We can confirm that a post-mortem examination has found that George tragically drowned whilst swimming in the pool at his home in Glyfada, Athens.
“George, you were the most special father, fiancé, son, brother, uncle, friend, teammate and person. Your enthusiasm and infectious personality brought so much love to those that were fortunate enough to know you and those that adored you from the stands.
“We will forever cherish the special memories we have of you and you will continue to live on in your beautiful son. You were due to fly home today for us to celebrate his first birthday together, but instead we mourn your loss.
“As a family it has been incredibly touching, but equally so very difficult to read the huge number of tributes written by those that knew George and from those whose life he touched. It was impossible not to love him.”
A Sheffield Wednesday fan has recently been accused of mocking Baldock’s death during the recent Steel City derby. A man was allegedly spotted holding up a sign during the game reading “Where’s Baldock?”
Both Sheffield Wednesday and South Yorkshire Police have confirmed that they are investigating the incident.
Baldock made 219 appearances for Sheffield United over seven seasons, helping the side to two promotions to the Premier League.
He left earlier this year in a move to Greek side Panathinaikos. Baldock also made 12 appearances for the Greek national team.
