Get pillows gleaming white again by adding 1 natural item to the wash

By staff2 September 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

Pillows can become discoloured or stained over time, especially after a hot summer. But there is a simple way to get yours looking brand-new and pure white again using just one natural ingredient

Pillows are more likely to be discoloured or stained at the end of summer as we tend to perspire more in the warmer months, but there is a simple way to get them looking new again.

Carrie Higgins, the author of the book Organisation Hacks and the founder of Making Lemonade has shared how to wash pillows as they are a hotspot for bacteria and even mould.

She stated: “I won’t go into too much detail, but needless to say pillows are hotbeds of junk collected in the six to eight hours you spend on them. Every. Single. Night.” However, you do not need to significant amount of time or money to get discoloured pillows white again, as Carrie has shared that the best stain remover is simple white vinegar.

It may seem odd, but vinegar is a highly effective natural cleaner. Because of its acidity, it is able to efficiently break down organic stains such as sweat, oils or other residue that often builds up on pillows.

Not only does vinegar remove stains but it is also antibacterial and a natural deodoriser so it will also get ride of bacteria and unpleasant smells in the fabric.

Carrie stated: “As dirty and drooly as my pillows were, I didn’t need to run ANY of them through a second time, the vinegar…worked like magic!”

How to naturally clean pillows

To begin, check the label to ensure the pillow can go in the washing machine, as certain materials like memory foam are not fit for machine washing.

Place the pillows in the washing machine but ensure you don’t overcrowd the appliance. It’s advised to wash two pillows simultaneously.

Pour 250ml of white vinegar into the fabric softener compartment of your washing machine, then add your usual detergent. Carrie opts for All Free and Clear laundry detergent liquid as it’s fragrance-free with no perfumes or dyes, reports the Express.

Select the hottest water temperature recommended on the pillow care label and run a delicate cycle. After the pillows have completed their wash, put the washing machine through a spin cycle to eliminate any remaining moisture.

Following the wash, your pillows should appear “clean, white and stain-free” but if any persistent marks remain, consider running them through a second wash.

How to dry pillows after washing

Put the pillows in the tumble dryer on a low-heat setting and use wool dryer balls to help restore their fluffiness. Alternatively, you can air-dry them outdoors if possible, as sunshine can naturally brighten fabrics and help eliminate stains.

Ensure the pillows are thoroughly dry before use to avoid mould growth and unpleasant odours. Your pillows will now be completely refreshed, allowing you to enjoy a comfortable night’s sleep on pristine bedding.

Carrie remarked: “Now your pillows will be gorgeous and ready to show off!”
