Get your garden smelling delicious using simple 4p kitchen waste item

By staff13 July 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

If your lawn is looking a little patchy, one keen gardener has shared a simple trick you can do with a certain kitchen food item that will grow your grass and give it a nice smell

There’s nothing nicer than sitting in your garden and smelling the flowers – but now you can make your lawn smell fragrant too. Some people love the smell of freshly cut grass, but here’s how you can make it smell even nicer.

According to gardening expert @gardening.with.ish, chamomile lawns are becoming “quite a big thing” as they are “low maintenance, you can mow them and they smell absolutely fantastic.” They’re also considered frost hardy too so they’ll grow back year after year.

He took to TikTok to share how easy it is to create a beautifully fragrant lawn with his step-by-step guide, perfect for beginners, and is perfect for those whose grass is in need of a little TLC.

The expert told viewers you can simply get the seeds from chamomile teabags, as the tea is made directly from the flowers of the chamomile plant. The flowers are then crushed up into the bags, which means there’s hundreds of seeds just in one tea bag – perfect for scattering across your lawn.

“Growing a chamomile lawn is exactly the same as if you’re growing normal grass it likes full sun and a well draining soil. It’s just as easy as sowing grass too. Simply take your tea bag and just lightly sprinkle the seeds directly on top of the ground. Make sure they’re watered for the first few weeks to keep them nice and happy and watch them grow.”

There are two ways you can look after your chamomile once planted. Firstly, you can regularly mow it keeping it about “two to three inches tall”, Ish said, which can help to create an amazing fragrant lawn and every time you cut it, it will smell “absolutely divine”.

You can also leave it, and let it grow tall and wild, and let it produce chamomile flowers. “If you pick them and dry them out, you can also make your own chamomile tea.”

Ish further detailed to anyone who is wanting to try out growing their own chamomile lawn, “for best results aim for mid-late spring or autumn,” to plant the seeds, and give them a good watering.

So next time you’re at the supermarket, and you want to grow your own lawn, grab some tea bags. A pack of 40 Tesco-own branded tea bags costs £1.75, with a box containing 40.

People were loving Ish’s video, as one viewer commented: “I love this idea. Buy a tea bag to grow grass to make your own tea bags forever,” while a second penned: “l have a corner of camomile my gosh it’s so beautiful and smell so good, they started to grow from last year but need cut it two times in year in early Spring and then in before autumn and you will get perfect ‘fields’ of camomile’s.”
